This edition of the religio-political writings of Johann Joachim Zublin (1724-1781) is a valuable and welcome addition to Swiss Americana. John J. Zubly, as he came to be known in the American colonies, had grown up in St. Gallen, Switzerland, where he studied for the ministry. He was ordained in the German Reformed Church of London in 1744 and then moved to South Carolina. Bibliophiles and Indiana history buffs alike are apt to have heard of John James Dufour. The story of the man who established vineyards at Vevay, for years the site of an annual wine festival, and who wrote the classic and rare The American Vine-dresser's Guide (Cincinnati: S. J. Browne, 1826) is an interesting one and one that deserves more attention. This biographical sketch of Michael Schlatter (1716-1790) presents a summary view on the basis of a doctoral dissertation which dealt mainly with his activities in Pennsylvania as commissioner of the Dutch-Reformed Church. Reverend Schlatter had moved to Pennsylvania at a time when thousands of Swiss and Germans were arriving in that North American province; as a Reformed minister, however, he belonged to a privileged elite among immigrants. He is a remarkable personality in eighteenth century American history because of his involvement in three areas.

The Swiss historian Karl Herzog was one of the innumerable middle-class intellectuals who exercised an influential role on European liberal politics in the first half of the nineteenth century. Many scholars have analyzed the participation of the bourgeoisie in political life, and they reach novel definitions concerning membership of this intellectual group within the middle class. Historians such as Robert R. Palmer, Alfred Cobban, L.C.B. Seaman and Lenore O'Boyle have devoted particular attention to this concern. Ramuz, Charles-Ferdinand (1878-1947), Swiss poet, novelist, and essayist, was born at Cully, a small town on Lake Geneva in the canton of Vaud. After completing his studies at the University of Lausanne, he went to Paris, where, from 1902 to 1914, he lived in obscurity and wrote four volumes of poetry in addition to eight novels and two collections of short stories, none of which attracted attention outside a small circle of friends and admirers. Zollinger, Albin (1895-1949), Swiss poet, novelist, and essayist, was born in Rüti, canton Zürich, where he spent his life as a schoolteacher. Zollinger is probably the greatest lyric poet in 20th century Swiss-German literature. His poetical style shows a genuine relationship to the styles of Georg Trakl, Gottfried Benn, Wilhelm Lehmann, and Peter Huchel.

Bichsel, Peter (1935-), Swiss writer and journalist, grew up in Olten, Solothurn canton, attended the teachers college in Solothurn, and taught at the elementary school in Bellach, where he eventually settled. Jacob Maag was born in Neunkirch, Canton Schaffhausen, in 1881 and came to Omaha, Nebraska, in 1905. From 1905 to 1961 he worked as a stonecutter and sculptor mainly in Omaha, but also in other parts of the Midwest. In 1962 he became the subject of an oral history project of the Greater Omaha Historical Society as a "pioneer citizen" in their "I Remember" series. The Greater Omaha Historical Society is now defunct, but thanks to Walter Wullschleger (see SAHS Newsletter, XVI, No. 1 (Jan. 1980), 31-36) we received a transcript of that interview. Starobinski, Jean (1920-), Swiss literary critic, was born and educated in Geneva, where he completed studies in literature and medicine. Since 1958 he has taught at the University of Geneva. Like his masters Marcel Raymond and Georges Poulet, Starobinski interprets the act of literary creation as an existential project of self-discovery and self-realization, embodied in the dominant thematic patterns and motifs of an author's works.

Spitteler, Carl (1845-1924), Swiss poet, novelist, and essayist, was born in Liestal, canton Basel-Land. Spitteler created an oeuvre that stands apart from the literature of his time. His preference for epic poetry was rooted in the extraordinary visual sense that retained his childhood experiences in bright, archetypal images vividly conveyed in Meine frühesten Erlebnisse (1914; My Earliest Experiences) and enabled him to depict inner life through action.

This past summer Dr. Martin Steinmann, expert on Paleography and Director of the Manuscript Division of the University Library of Basel, Switzerland, directed the Third Summer Institute in the Archival Sciences at the Newberry Library of Chicago.
