On an earlier occasion, I have written that there is only one political party in America, the only one possible in a republic: the Democratic [in the original sense of the term, i.e. rule by the people]. It is a party that has many branches with the same political viewpoints. Nevertheless, they differ from each other on several points, which they defend in their various newspapers. They try to promote their opinions, views, and political creeds with the public through candidates whom they nominate for office in elections--first and foremost, the presidential election.

On July 3, 1871, an improved constitution was adopted and a burial ground in Greenwood Cemetery was purchased. The yellow fever epidemic of 1878 caused the entire plot of ground to be filled and compelled action on the building of a suitable vault, which was completed and consecrated with appropriate ceremonies on October 5, 1879.

Danishness is flourishing in the U.S.A. at the dawn of the twenty-first century, and it is not difficult to find this Danishness, or rather, to find what Americans consider to be Danishness. When the Danish media focus on Danishness in the U.S., they tend to highlight two areas: Solvang, California, the so-called "Danish Capital of America," and the two "Danish Villages," Elk Horn and Kimballton, Iowa. Today, Solvang has a population of around 5,000 and Elk Horn/ Kimballton around 1,000. However, estimates have 1.5 million tourists visiting Solvang and 80,000 visiting Elk Horn/Kimballton annually. During the 1980's and 1990's, the firm of MAAR Associates of Newark, Delaware, conducted more than thirty archeological investigations of the prehistoric sites and Danish Plantations of the U. S. Virgin Islands. These studies were conducted to fulfill the requirements of the National Historic Preservation Act prior to proposed hotel construction there. However, after the islands were devastated by Hurricane Hugo in 1987, many of these projects were never built. Jens and Maren Stine Rasmusdatter came from the small island of Mom, Denmark. On a larger map of Denmark, Mon is a scarcely discernible plot of separated land, with chalk cliffs on its eastern seaboard and sandy beaches on the other. Stege is its chief town, set by an inlet called Noret and surrounded by verdant fields and forests. It is an idyllic spot, with its own culture and legends. Residents love it. Present day tourists are charmed by it.

small black book in which he chronicled the stages of

his life from his childhood to the 1960s. This

chronicle is very interesting as it shows first, how the

son of a hotelier was thoroughly prepared for

following in his family's footsteps as a fourth

generation hotelier, and second, how his arrival in the

United States in 1939 and the Second World War led

him to an unexpected career in military intelligence

after which he returned to his career as hotelier.

Political realities in the German Empire at the beginning of the fourteenth century were harsh, and communities that wanted to gain or maintain their autonomy had to deal with serious external threats. Most frequently, this meant that military success was essential for survival. Many forces vied for authority, influence, and domination over the regions that formed the Swiss Confederation, which later developed into the modem state of Switzerland. The largest threat to Swiss sovereignty in this period was factions of nobles, most importantly the house of Habsburg, which were expanding their control over the region. The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich is one of the few breaking into these prestigious positions. (The sister institute in Lausanne is much younger and smaller, hence did not yet have time enough to grow to fame.) However, in many people's view, ETH in Zurich is not as well known in the United States as it should deserve.
