It will be the primary purpose of this thesis to prove that the thinking and writing, especially the writing of poetry, during the period of the Texas Republic express a nationalism which stems from the separate, national feeling in which Texans had after they declared their independence from Mexico. In order to carry through this research the writer intends to study the poetry for the period 1836 to 1845 in so far as it is available for the study.

The purpose of the present study is to ascertain the principles of poetry to which Robinson adhers, to determine his position in relation to the imagists, and to discuss in some detail the technical qualities of his shorter poems.

The verse herein printed was written by students now in residence at the University of Nebraska. The first poem in the book received the prize of fifty dollars offered by the class of 1898, and the second poem the prize of twenty-five dollars offered by the Vestals, an organization of girls in the College of Arts and Sciences. The committee chose twenty poems, which were submitted for the final award to Christopher Morley, John G. Neihardt and Percy MacKaye. Letter from William C. Booth to Thomas Fenton Taylor describing his relationship with Walter Whitman, Sr., and his son, Walt Whitman, the poet.

The letter is pasted into the front of Taylor’s copy of John Burroughs, Whitman: A Study. Volume Ten of the Riverby Edition of the Writings of John Burroughs (Houghton, Mifflin and Company, 1905). The Burroughs set was presented to Taylor by the publisher on March 8, 1906 per the bookplate in the first volume.
