The majority of Emily Dickinson’s poems deal with love, immortality, and death. There is no doubt that she was preoccupied with two distinct subjects, death and immortality. An important point that this thesis stresses is the fact that Emily’s preoccupation did not muffle her senses, but instead enlivened them. It is essential that one must consider the biographical influences that affected Emily throughout her life, but even more importantly, one must also recognize the correlation between Emily’s preoccupation with these two subjects and the deaths of so many of her closest friends. This thesis focuses on the role of narrator in selected works of Edgar Allan Poe. The thesis finds that Poe exerts a lot of effort fashioning the narrator. He discredits his reliability to discourage a face-value credibility. He puts him in a dream state to give him access to his subconscious mind. Mark Twain's Uses Of Suffering In The Writer-Character-Reader Triad, Virginia Armiger Grant

This thesis studies Mark Twain’s uses of suffering in the writer character reader triad. In the book Huckleberry Finn, Twain himself seems to identify more closely with Huck than he does with Tom, as evidenced by the first person narrative in Finn and the more serious, more carefully developed autobiographical incidents in that book. Perhaps because Twain’s later life was so bleak and unhappy, he poured all of his self-defeat and pessimism into his thoughts for Huck’s old age.

This thesis studies the works of James A. Michener as a social historian. Six of his novels, three international and three American, have been examined and shown to be reflections of his deep interest in our country and other lands. His works contain a vast amount of information about the regions or topics. Additionally, they provide the reader with a record of historical events in the manner expected of a historical work. In his address upon receiving the Nobel Prize for Literature on December 10, 1950, William Faulkner stated that the only topic "worth writing about" is "the problems of the human heart in conflict with itself ."1 Throughout his career, Faulkner attempted to convey this idea; regardless of the actual subject or the characters, this theme weaves itself through the author's works. Even Faulkner's works of the 1920s and early 1930s demonstrate this concern with the psychological and emotional problems of his characters. My thesis concentrates on Mrs.Katherine O'Flaherty Chopin, a Southerner who published between 1889 and 1899, and who, for years, was considered an obsolete Local Colorist. She is now enjoying a revival of interest which must be attributed to her importance as a writer who exhibited those precepts upon which modern literature is based - those found in the movements of Realism and Naturalism.
With literary roots in the Local Color mode,Mrs.Chopin's early works exemplify, to some extent at least, all of its principles. While she falters somewhat in the dominant literary technique, we find the Local Colorist's emphasis on geography, …

Thomas Nelson Page, a native Virginian, was known for writing short stories which idealized the Old South. At first glance his short stories seamed to glorify the south; once one delves deeper, they see that Page criticized the one thing his books revolved around. This thesis analyzes the four parts of Page’s short stories (religion, politics, economics, and social structure) to prove that even though Page has a deep love for the Old South, his short stories has embedded criticisms within them.

This somewhat historical approach to a literary topic, the Virginia Writers' Club and its progeny, a small literary magazine, The Reviewer, is concerned primarily with the presentation of evidence that there was a great deal of writing in Richmond, Virginia, in the early 1920"s. Although insufficient research materials available locally provide scanty basis for a critical analysis of the many works of these writers, I feel that the existence of the club, the motivation for its formation, and the kind of atmosphere that it produced deserve attention.

The aim of this study has been to collect all the available bibliographical and biographical data about Wallace Gould in an effort to estimate the nature and significance of his poetry. The focus of the paper is on the shaping forces of the poet's inspiration, and dI have attempted to show how the background and experience of the man have influenced the scope and material of his work.
No previous comprehensive study of Gould has been made. Thus, research materials were tedious to come by, and the conclusions of this paper may be question able. I have, however, had the …
