A Study Of John Henry Newman's Influence On Stephen Dedalus In James Joyce's A Portrait Of The Artist As A Young Man, Robert J. Mceleney

Theses & Honors Papers

An analysis of what has been overlooked previously in the relationship between James Joyce, Stephen Dedalus, and John Henry Newman that is seen in the novel A Portrait. James Joyce’s use of Newman’s writings in the novel indicates that he had knowledge of the author’s major works. Additionally, Stephan Dedalus uses quotations from his works. He uses the thoughts and words of Newman’s sermons in his prayer life. Stephen’s intellectual and spiritual growth cannot be properly evaluated apart from Newman’s place in the novel.

Lancelot: A Study Of The Development Of His Character From Celtic Origin To Chretien And Malory, Ike R. Stoneberger

Theses & Honors Papers

In this thesis I have researched the origin and development of the character of Lancelot . I have attempted to make intelligible analyses of contributions of his character to the development of Arthurian romance. In so doing , I have stressed the origin of his character according to the belief that Lancelot's antecedents lie in Celtic myth; I have outlined the role of Lancelot in certain medieval romances-- "Le Chevalier de la Charrette" by Chretien de Troyes and Le Morte D 'Arthur by Sir Thomas Malory ; and , I have shown how the character of Lancelot illustrates and glorifies …

General Semantics And Shakespeare, Florence Richardson Jun 1959

General Semantics And Shakespeare, Florence Richardson

Theses & Honors Papers

It is not the intention of this thesis to attempt to "explain" any of Shakespeare's plays but simply to use their objective presentation of human problems for illustrating the principles of general semantics. It is realized that many interpretations are possible other than those selected here and it is asked that the reader keep in mind that for the purposes of this paper we are considering the plays only within the framework of that system.
