Mercury’S Shadow: The Pharmaceutical Sources Of Hysteria, Claudia Stokes

This essay reconsiders the nineteenth-century epidemic of hysteria in the context of common pharmaceutical practice. Examining the health records of industrial workers, Civil War soldiers, and such prominent figures as Abraham Lincoln, Louisa May Alcott, and Harriet Beecher Stowe, this essay argues that hysteria in its distinctive nineteenth-century manifestation was the result of mercury poisoning. Physicians throughout the nineteenth century commonly prescribed mercury treatments for everything from teething and diaper rash to dysentery and syphilis. Nineteenth-century Americans were habitually exposed to mercury, and yet physicians did not recognize the symptoms of chronic mercury poisoning, which included numbness and paralysis of …

The following paper will explore the relationship between Emily Dickinson’s poetry, the circumstances of her life, and the historical context in which she lived to glean an understanding of how her mental health influenced her work. Selected poems by Dickinson will be reviewed and analyzed, along with a brief overview of nineteenth century attitudes towards female mental health with a particular emphasis on the medical diagnosis of female hysteria.

Doris May Lessing (1919-2013) lived most her life on the veld of South Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) and came back to London in 1949. Her multicultural upbringing allowed her to gain a special connection with nature via her intuitive instinct. This article sheds light on three novels by Lessing namely, The Golden Notebook (1962), The Four-Gated City (1969) and The Memoirs of a Survivor (1974) that are to be tackled within the theoretical frame of ecofeminist and Gaian spirituality. Diversity In Publishing: Does Author Identity Affect Author Treatment In The North American Fiction Publishing Industry?, Chloe Comeau

Academic Leadership Journal in Student Research

The fiction publishing industry has a long history of promoting only straight, white, cisgender voices in the books they publish and the staff they hire. This study employed the Delphi method to investigate the connection between author identity and author treatment in publishing. In a series of questionnaires, 11 participants answered questions and shared their experiences with diversity in publishing. The results indicated that sexism, homophobia, and racism all exist in the industry, and author identity impacts author treatment in North American fiction publishing. The concept of literary ecology is developed as an instrument for large-scale literary study by Alexander Beecroft (2015), for whom the metaphor emphasizes the great diversity of world literatures and the possibility of organizing this diversity into cultural types, analogous to the biologist’s ecotypes. For a study of Latin poetics, the most important typological distinction is between cosmopolitan and vernacular languages. Latin acquired an articulated body of stylistic norms (“poetics”) in antiquity as a vernacular language; subsequent developments in Latin poetics were conditioned by the language’s acquisition of cosmopolitan characteristics. J.R.R Tolkien wrote his essay, Beowulf: The Monsters and the Critics, in response to claims that the Anglo-Saxon poem was too simple and focused too much on the monsters. The essay defends the epic poem as a myth about Christian ideals set in a pagan world and decries its reputation as a historical document instead of the work of art it deserved to be. Throughout my dissertation, I analyze what Agatha Christie's 1934 Murder on the Orient Express and 1937 Death on the Nile and their 1970s and 2000s feature film adaptations suggest about the roles of mothers, female friends, and lovers. The underlying issue I speak to is how these texts, working off of a similar storyline, speak differently to these roles, especially when analyzed across time.
