For better and for worse, classic fairy tales have come under severe criticism as paradigms of sexist patriarchy in recent decades. Likewise, C. S. Lewis has been viewed as sexist, even misogynistic. While many fairy tale and Lewis fans might be tempted to dismiss all of these criticisms as nonsense, gender is one of the predominant discourses of our time, our questions and the varied answers are significant, and in this essay I consider how Lewis’ development of the fairy tale genre in The Chronicles of Narnia offers timeless, possibly even surprising, Christian wisdom. Excerpt: "In The Chronicles of Narnia, children are celebrated as models of heroic potential in the ways they realize, apologize for, and repent of sinful words and deeds. This is in keeping with C. S. Lewis’ desire that his young readers would recognize and practice these virtues as signs of the “childlike faith” Jesus expects of his disciples (Mark 10:15; Luke 18:17).92 Conversely, adults are generally shown to be owners of an obtuse conscience and a recalcitrant will.

Twice in his life C. S. Lewis encountered—and greatly admired—authors involved in occult theory and practice.1 The first such figure was William Butler Yeats, the second, more than two decades later, Charles Williams. Lewis reacted to their occult preoccupations in quite different ways, even while acknowledging his continuing fascination with the subject.

Vinyle zine, is a Black literary magazine pedagogically driven to increase cultural literacy within the African-American community. C. S. Lewis’ last and arguably best novel, Till We Have Faces, is an impressively nuanced revision and recasting of Apuleius’ short tale of Cupid and Psyche, Books 4–6 of The Golden Ass. Although this ancient myth was the main source for Till We Have Faces, inspiration was no doubt gained from many places. One such influence, previously unnoted, was the biblical book of Esther. This study will note some of the key places where the influence of Esther is detectable, in particular Lewis’ choice of the name “Istra.” This is followed by an investigation into why Esther may have …

do not intend here anything so ambitious as a comprehensive study of the question posed by my title. My purpose in this essay is threefold: in the first section, to augment the case that has been made for one debt to Williams; in the second, to narrow down the demonstrable range of Williams’ influence in another area, that of the Arthurian material in That Hideous Strength; and finally, to point out a commonality in their theory of history that can probably not, however, be considered an instance of oneway influence, but rather an agreement that reflects their shared Christian worldview. …

Ivy House And Other Stories: A Collection Of Horror, Vanessa Deltufo
Honors Program Theses and Projects
The centerpiece of my thesis is called Ivy House and it’s a gothic novella that is very inspired by Mexican Gothic, showing similar themes of a family abusing the natives of the land to the point of their own demise. The other four short stories I write are all inspired by female horror and Gothic writers before me, as I represent a lot of the struggles women face and fear. My stories also elevate themes of repression through addictions, the supernatural, isolated settings, and everything in between.
