Brief discussion of an unindexed note found in the microfilmed archives of the publisher Richard Bentley and Son that makes a claim regarding the puzzling marriage of the poet Letitia Elizabeth Landon ("L.E.L.) and the Scottish colonial administrator George Maclean. The note retails gossip about Landon's seduction by William Jerdan, and makes claims that her later marriage to George Maclean was marred by Maclean's having made a prior engagement with a Scottish woman, who later died when her dress caught fire.

Recent legislation passed in states including Georgia, Florida, and Kentucky have included clauses that govern “divisive” material and the manner in which this material is discussed, particularly in schools. The term “divisive” is never truly defined beyond content that is “patently offensive to prevailing standards.” The emphasis has been placed on the fact that students should not be biased by the information that they are taught or allowed to access, but definitions are lax as to what constitutes inappropriate information. The loose criteria as to what counts as “unsuitable” opens up divisive material to easy censorship based on partisan and …

Mariana Starke’s The Widow of Malabar (1791) is a tragedy set on India’s Malabar Coast. The play depicts a widow reluctantly preparing to commit sati (the practice of a widow immolating herself on her husband’s funeral pyre). She becomes the point of contention in a conflict between a Hindu Brahmin and her former lover, the general leading an invading British force. Throughout the play, the Brahmins are portrayed as vicious barbarians, the British as noble harbingers of a more civilized way of life. Adaptations Of World War I Stories Into Screen Dramas: The New “Heritage Films”, Elizabeth Carroll

This dissertation examines both written and filmic texts to determine the way World War I trauma was depicted in the postwar period and how it is now presented to a modern audience. This study begins with texts written in the immediate postwar period: Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway, Vera Brittain’s war memoir Testament of Youth and R.C. Sherriff’s play and novel Journey’s End and draws comparisons to their twentieth and twenty-first century film adaptations. A coda also examines the novel and film The Hours. Using psychology, history, literary criticism, and film theory, I conclude the films are generally more invested in …

I place the 2015-released film Suffragette within a context of the efforts Elizabeth Robins made to document and, by witnessing, to advocate, the early phases of the British Women’s Suffrage Movement in England. Robins wrote and participated across margins. An expatriate American living in England, she had no personal advantage to gain with a franchise. In her late forties and in ill health, she took perhaps only "safe" opportunities to thrust herself into the fray.
