Milton's "Lycidas": Elevating The Human Condition, Haylee Edwards

John Milton’s 1637 poem “Lycidas” is a pastoral elegy told from the point of view of a shepherd grieving the loss of his friend, Lycidas. Written in honor of Milton’s late classmate, Edward King, “Lycidas” is a Christian allegory. This essay situates “Lycidas” within the history and characteristics of the pastoral elegy before analyzing how the poem at once inhabits and progressively deviates from the traditional form. Milton combines the traditional pastoral form with Elizabethan ideals and imagery to affirm his own religious, political, and existential views about death and the afterlife. This paper considers the work of poets who travel from the area of the Indigenous land of Turtle Island now known as Canada to the Indigenous territories of Australia and Aotearoa. The poets engage in different forms of movement on the land that reveal varying degrees of awareness of and respect for Indigenous sovereignty. Jane Austen’s Persuasion (1818) contains a surprising amount of social walking and leisurely walking parities undertaken by Anne Elliot and her upper-class compatriots. Viewed through an Austenian lens, a reflection of the walk highlights the similarities and differences between nineteenth-century and post-millennial walking for pleasure. Roads are frequently conceptualized as shared spaces that symbolize freedom, despite the fact that they are also tightly monitored sites where laws and public policy hold sway. Prosodic Protocols And Interruptions Of Them In Piers Plowman, Ian Cornelius

In premodern societies artificial prosody supplied an encoding protocol for the transmission of sound in writing. Focusing on the fourteenth-century English poem Piers Plowman, this essay examines mid-stream interruption, modification, or blending of prosodic protocols. In most cases the interruption takes the form of a mid-line switch from English verse to Latin prose. In a few cases, the switch is from English verse to Latin verse. These interruptions of protocol are part of the formal artistry and multilingual facility of Piers Plowman, encoding a great range of sound and some silence. Tolkien's Tevildo - Of Fables, Rings And Cats, Polina Svadkovskaia

Journal of Tolkien Research

The article explores Tolkien's process of deconstructing two medieval beast fable narratives in his creation of Tevildo, Prince of Cats, whereby he strategically aligns the feline with malevolence. It further posits that the magic of the One Ring is presented preliminarily in The Tale of Tinúviel in two forms: Tevildo's golden collar and the enchantment he uses to control other cats. Tevildo is thus endowed with tokens of villainy reminiscent of Sauron's: however, the cat fails at projecting fear due to the underlying moralistic element of the story and the fragmentation of the magic his power relies upon.
