“We Average Unbeautiful Watchers”: Reflexive Fans And The Readerly Stakes Of American Sports Narratives, Noah Cohan

“We Average Unbeautiful Watchers” traces the role of the American sports fan across literary genres from the novel to the memoir to the blog post. Representing mass-mediated athletics as fundamentally narrative-based entertainments, I argue that fans function as readers whether they realize it or not. Further, while it may seem that sports narratives are “written” by athletes and assigned meaning by journalists, my project demonstrates that fans appropriate those narratives in diverse ways to form their own sense of identity. Alternative Histories: Imagining Ancient Britain On The London Stage, 1560-1642, Meredith Anne Beales

I argue that plays set in ancient Britain helped shape early modern concepts of anachronism and history, undermining British identities and the early modern British state. While early modern English historians searched for the noble past which would undergird the creation of a modern empire, the theatre invited audiences to imagine an ancient Britain populated by noble Celts, fierce dragons, prophetic wizards, and defeated Romans, as if all these alternative stories were equally plausible. When scholars study the relationship between British history and identity, they usually bring a twenty-first century understanding of history as distinct from fiction. I show that …

The Heart Of Whiteness: Interracial Marriage And White Masculinity In American Fiction, 1830-1905, Lauren M. W. Barbeau

Building on whiteness scholars’ notion that whiteness can be gained, my dissertation argues that a property in whiteness, and its attendant privileges, can be lost. By examining representations of interracial marriage in American literature between 1830 and 1905, I identify marriage across the color line as one of the primary modes through which white men can lose their privilege. Interracial marriage violates what I term the marriage contract, a tri-party agreement between man, woman, and nation that guaranteed democratic rights to white men and privileges to their dependents in return for white-white marriage. Abstract: this article focuses on deadly girls’ voices in "The Banshee" and "Doll: A Romance of the Mississippi," two short stories taken from Joyce Carol Oates’s collection The Female of the Species, subtitled Tales of Mystery and Suspense. It shows that children are used as leading and focal characters not only to increase suspense but also to manipulate the readers’ traditional sets of ethical, semantic and literary references. Oates resorts to her favourite “aesthetics of fear” for it is a powerful means of putting horror and abjection at a distance, and it is associated with the question of meaning—"meaning is …

"Trifles Of Value": Craft As Communication In Victorian Literature, Amanda C. Larson

This thesis argues that craft functions in the nineteenth century as a form of communication that expresses female identity in Elizabeth Gaskell's Cranford and Margaret Oliphant's Miss Marjoribanks. By looking at the novels through the lens of Talia Schaffer's craft paradigm in connection with Thing theory, it is possible to make connections between the role of craft and identity, which in turn raises questions about craft and female agency. These connections to female agency illuminate tensions between craft and the economy, gender disparity in the arts, and the limitations of class. In order to explore these notions it is …
