Aesop's Fables And George Eliot's Brother And Sisters Sonnets, Margaret Wolfit Dec 2005

Aesop's Fables And George Eliot's Brother And Sisters Sonnets, Margaret Wolfit

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

It is always exciting to discover something new and to come upon it unexpectedly. That was my happy experience a few years ago. I had decided to try my hand at devising a biographical programme on George Eliot and to attempt to portray her at the end of her life, reminiscing on past events. I wanted to absorb as much as I could about her, starting with her early days. What were the influences that shaped her life and writing? What books had she read as a child?

She tells us: 'I could not be satisfied with the things around …

A Psychological Literary Critique From A Jungian Perspective Of E. M. Forster's A Passage To India., David W. Elliott Dec 2005

A Psychological Literary Critique From A Jungian Perspective Of E. M. Forster's A Passage To India., David W. Elliott

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This paper is a psychological reading of E. M. Forster's A Pasage to India. It uses the psychological theories of C. G. Jung and the methodological postulates of Jungian literary critic, Terence Dawson, to examine the psychological implications of the text, especially in relation to the novel's characters. Attention is given to biographical material related to Forster, particularly his homosexuality, that is important for understanding the psychological implications of the text as well as Forster's art. The paper concludes that the Marabar Caves is the the central psychological symbol of the narrative, representing what Jung calls the collective unconscious. Both …

Indefinite Ethnicity In Fact And Fiction: "Invisible Color" Or "Honkified Meanderings"?, Anita Louise Hughes Dec 2005

Indefinite Ethnicity In Fact And Fiction: "Invisible Color" Or "Honkified Meanderings"?, Anita Louise Hughes

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Passing, both standard and reverse, is the process of changing ethnicity. The methodology of reverse passing varies, but claiming "no color" is ineffective in fact and fiction as can be seen in James McBride's The Color of Water, Shirlee Taylor Haizlip's The Sweeter the Juice, Danzy Senna's Caucasia, and Rosellen Brown's Half a Heart. The characters in these texts attempt indefinite ethnicity by denying color and are prone to restlessness and failure until they accept racial duality.

Ascending Into Ecstasy: Sex And Religion In Three Albee Plays, Carolyn M. Rodkey

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study is an investigation of American playwright, Edward Albee, and how he uses the themes of sex and religion to develop the plots and characters in three of his major works. Foremost, this analysis is devoted to the exploration of Albee's 1964 drama, Tiny Alice; however, this work also contains two secondary studies of Three Tall Women and The Play about the Baby. "The Origins of the Themes" presents biographical information relevant to the study of sex and religion. Albee's religious skepticism and spiritual self-discoveryalong with his volatile relationship with his mother brought on, in part, by his homosexuality-are …

“New Words, New Everything”: Fragmentation And Trauma In Jean Rhys, Maren Linett Dec 2005

“New Words, New Everything”: Fragmentation And Trauma In Jean Rhys, Maren Linett

Department of English Faculty Publications

Jean Rhys’s novels present an intriguing case study for thinking about the status and meaning of fragmented text. With their polyvocal, nonlinear narration, often presented through interior monologues, novels such as Voyage in the Dark and Good Morning, Midnight exemplify modernist fragmentation while intimating a deeper sense of pain and loss than most accounts of such fragmentation acknowledge. In spite of the strong undertone of psychological damage it conveys, the fragmentary nature of Rhys’s writing is sometimes celebrated by critics as evidence of a subversive stance, either in Rhys or in her characters. Such a response is not peculiar to …

Smoke And Mirrors: Internalizing The Magic Lantern Show In Villette, Diane Hoeveler Dec 2005

Smoke And Mirrors: Internalizing The Magic Lantern Show In Villette, Diane Hoeveler

English Faculty Research and Publications

With considerable historical background in mind, I would like to examine a number of the stock gothic tropes, including the mysterious nun, the paintings of women, the theater scene, and the fête in Villette as examples of not simply one of last gasps of high Victorian gothicism, but also of the internalization and critique of gothic theatrical technology. As Castle observes, the "phantasmagoria should [have] become a kind of master trope in nineteenth-century romantic writing," and certainly she applies the representation in provocative ways to the symbols and imagery in Thomas Carlyle's French Revolution. In a similar fashion, I …

An Interview With Wendell Berry, Birkin Gilmore Nov 2005

An Interview With Wendell Berry, Birkin Gilmore

Honors Theses

In choosing which questions to ask of Mr. Berry, I was interested in the environment, physical and spiritual, that gives rise to the poems. The Sabbath poems, for instance, come from the author's meditations as he passes through places and spaces of time where, as Mr. Berry has written, "the heart and mind are open and aware." As Mr. Berry is intimately concerned with cultivating land, so these are moments to be cultivated whose fruits are poems. I am interested in how the place in which the poems are written participates in their creation. If we are to keep alive …

Sunday In The Park With George: A Musical Curation By Stephen Sondheim, Amy Riordan Nov 2005

Sunday In The Park With George: A Musical Curation By Stephen Sondheim, Amy Riordan

English Theses - Archive

This analysis serves to reveal the strong interconnectedness between museums and theatre (mentioned only briefly by other scholars) as uniquely demonstrated by Stephen Sondheim's musical, Sunday in the Park with George. Because Sondheim chose George Seurat's museum-housed painting, Sunday on the Island La Grande Jatte, as the foundation for his show, museum practices including labels, titles, ways of seeing, and curatorial authority--to which Seurat's painting has already been subjected--can also be located in Stephen Sondheim's musical. However, in the musical the artist is returned authority over his painting, above museum practice and curator bias. By granting the artist such dominion …

Teilhard De Chardin's View Of Diminishment And The Late Stories Of Flannery O'Connor, Steven Watkins Nov 2005

Teilhard De Chardin's View Of Diminishment And The Late Stories Of Flannery O'Connor, Steven Watkins

English Dissertations - Archive

ABSTRACT Scholars have used different approaches to study and interpret the work of Flannery O'Connor; those approaches have ranged from Feminism to New Criticism to religious (Christian and non-Christian) to psychological. These attempts to analyze and interpret her work have produced a diverse approach to understanding this intriguing author, who lived only to the age of thirty-nine because of lupus erthymatosus. The approach of this dissertation is that the presence of this disease in her life caused her to look for ways to resolve and adapt to the limitations of the disease. One prominent source for reflecting and resolving the …

Fragment Of An Analysis Of A Case Of Technical Writing, Bonnie Noonan Oct 2005

Fragment Of An Analysis Of A Case Of Technical Writing, Bonnie Noonan

Faculty and Staff Publications

At the time of this study, I was primarily a compositionist becoming acclimated into the field of technical writing. I was used to teaching "universal" concepts of the writing process (pre-writing, drafting, editing, and proofreading) and historical concepts ofrhetoric (writer, audience, purpose). Furthermore, I am a liberal, from the 70s no less. I emerged into my young adulthood believing that positive social change could be effected primarily by resistance to corporate culture, a culture I perceived as antithetical to individuality. In this study of one document produced by one writer in a large corporate organization, however, I noted a dynamic, …
