When I first started teaching, grammar education was specifically addressed in my district's learning objectives: students will identify adjectives and adverbs; they will diagram subjects and direct objects. As a new teacher, I did my best to meet the objectives. I tried to make the content interesting and, somehow, connected to writing: we wrote clues for treasure hunts using prepositional phrases and descriptions of our own 'wild things" (a la Maurice Sendak) with elaborate adjectives. Once, I spent a week teaching verbals with comic strips to a ninth grade honors class, only to receive a scathing letter from a parent …

College writing centers are individualized places, which often causes miscommunication of the ideas and purposes centers uphold. However, if centers articulate the use of formative assessment strategies in tutoring writing, they would help alleviate miscommunications and strengthen the way writing centers explain their work in literature and practice; centers can also use formative assessment tools to evaluate their practices. This study identifies formative assessment strategies by means of observing writer/tutor roles, interactions, and outcomes in University of Northern Iowa (UNI) Writing Center practices in one-on-one tutorials for Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST) writers and in the Spring 2000 PPST Workshop. The primary aims of this study are to identify the common prepositional errors in the written texts of Form 4 Malay ESL students who have studied English in school for ten years, to measure the relative intensities of these errors and to find out the causes for the occurrence of these errors. The present research is a study of the discourse semantic stratum within the systemic functional theory of language. It focuses on cohesion in written discourse and more specifically, on conjunctions in authentic texts. Five written­ to-be-read speech texts delivered by the then Minister of Education Dato' Sri Najib Tun Abdul Razak were chosen for the analysis of the cohesive conjunctions present in them. This study attempts to trace the composing processes of pre-intermediate ESL students in their first language and the English language. It is also to test the hypothesis that pre-­intermediate ESL students use L1 as the dominant language to think when writing in their first language and the English Language. This is a qualitative research project using a case-study approach obtaining data through multiple data collection method. The purpose of this study is to investigate the rural 'cultural' problems and to determine their effect on the learning of English. Twenty students from different ethnic backgrounds and English language proficiency in six rural schools were interviewed. In addition, ten teachers also from different rural schools and ethnic backgrounds responded to a questionnaire. The problems discussed by both the teacher and student respondents arose due to the rural cultural setting. Conversational lmplicature (CI) is a form of pragmatic indirectness in language use that is widely considered to be an adult discourse phenomenon. However, detection of its use in children's discourse has led the researcher to embark on a study to document evidence of this phenomenon by investigating IO subjects aged 3 to 7 years. This study focuses on conversational implicature in the informal spoken discourse of a Malaysian radio chat programme. The study observes that conversation consists of utterances which have literal and non-literal meaning or underlying, intended and implied meaning. The study examines the implied meaning conveyed by the speakers, the inference made by the listeners and the strategies employed. Data is collected by recording sample programmes and the spoken discourse is examined using the Gricean framework, that is, the Cooperative Principle, the four conversational maxims and the violations of the maxims. This research is a study of the use of Malaysian English creative writing in Malaysia. Focusing on the extraction and categorization of Malaysian English lexis used by two Malaysian writers, this research set out to study the extent to which these writers use lexical items from the non-native variety in their prose writings. Language purists have often accused non-native varieties as being the result of a failure of approximation. The Nominal Group (NG), which carries lexical content, is part of a clause that contains nouns, determiners, numerals, epithets, classifiers and qualifiers. This paper gives an overview of how NGs function in response to the concepts found in inspirational writings with Christian themes. The NGs are selected from five different sources on such writings. The NGs are quantitatively and qualitatively described and analysed in both their logical and experiential structures.
