The aim of this thesis is to highlight the significance of Christos Tsiolkas's first novel, Loaded (1995), as a Grunge text within the milieu of Australian literature. Grunge is a problematic genre in that it is difficult to define and is surrounded by major contradictions relating to its production and reception. Tsiolkas maintains that Grunge seeks to represent the contemporary local experience of living in Australia and the journey of Loaded's protagonist, Ari, reflects this by representing the nuances of contemporary Australian society on the margins. The Characters And Dramaturgy Of Tennessee Williams : An Analysis Through The Presentation Of Two One-Act Plays, Lucy Eyre

An analysis into the background of Tennessee Williams strongly suggests that the two one-act plays, This Property is Condemned and The Lady of Larkspur Lotion are autobiographical accounts, being that the characters arc based either on Williams himself family members or friends, and indeed, the plays arc representations of the era in wh1ch they were written. Also, a simultaneous investigation into the dramaturgy of these plays shows Williams' innovative “use of all the resources of the contemporary stage” (Boxill 23). and the rehearsal process and workshop presentation was an exploration and discovery into how these resources can be implemented …

(First paragraph) At Old Dominion University, English majors must take one of the following courses-Postcolonial Literature, Literature by Minorities, African-American Literature, or Women Writers. In each course, our majors encounter new materials and perspectives. I teach Virginia Woolf's To the Lighthouse in Women Writers, a course in which students expect to explore feminist perspectives. Students range in age from nineteen lo sixty, but most are in their twenties or thirties. Frequently the first in their families to attend college, many come from conservative homes where feminist is a derogatory word. Therefore I find that the best way into a feminist …

The Woman Behind The Camera: An Auteur Study Of The Films Of Dorothy Arzner, Jami Nicole Cope

Dorothy Arzner was the first woman to join the Director's Guild of America and one of the only directors to amass a catalog of eighteen films. Despite the respect she managed to win in Hollywood during the 1930s and 1940s, a stylistic auteur study has never been completed of many of her films. In this thesis, I review seven of Arzner' s films to uncover her stylistic sense of direction and editing to define her status as an auteur. The opening chapter provides background information regarding Arzner' s life and a working definition of the film term "auteur." In this …

Children's picture books portraying Mexican Americans can provide Mexican American children a means of connecting with their culture. Picture books are also a way for nonMexican Americans to learn about the culture. This research investigated three questions. What are the characteristics of Mexican American culture? Becoming a person of character is an individual responsibility, yet society uses institutions and media to help guide future generations to obtain virtues and moral values. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the pillars of character depicted in children's literature published in the United States from 1950-1999 reflect the renewal in character education programs for schoolchildren.

A content analysis was used to analyze twenty-five best-selling children's picture books from 1950-1999 that were randomly selected to be in the sample population. The Portrayal Of Stepfamilies In Young Adult Literature, Cynthia Buck Tuttle

This study used content analysis of a selected sample of 25 contemporary young adult fiction books published between 1990-2000, to determine if stepfamilies are portrayed accurately. Contemporary American families are less likely to endure as a traditional biological household. Novels read by young adults may not reflect these new realities. Findings indicate that in a majority of the titles stepparents are portrayed positively and they gave their stepchild time and flexibility to adapt to the stepfamily situation. Findings also revealed that the biological relationship was not more important than the marital relationship. There was insufficient data to prove that the …

We were watching Remember the Titans, a fine movie about Coach Herman Boone's first year as head football coach of the newly integrated football team at T. C. Williams High School in 1971, and several scenes in the movie touched the old high school coach/high school jock heart that still beats in my chest and brought tears to my eyes.

Perhaps the most traditional, conservative bastions of literature in America are those that are home to the thousands of high school Advanced Placement English classes throughout the United States. In these classrooms, diligent students and teachers study "literature of enduring quality" in preparation for the rigorous AP English literature examination given each spring. Typically the curriculum of these courses relies heavily on the classics: works by Shakespeare, Tolstoy, Hugo, Austen, Hawthorne, Hemingway, and the rest of the authors enshrined in literature's pantheon. Modernist and postmodernist writer Mary McCarthy was a unique feminist writer. Throughout her writing career, which spanned nearly fifty years, McCarthy authored three autobiographical volumes, nine volumes of fiction, two books about art, and numerous essays and reviews. Regardless of the critical response to her writing, McCarthy wrote her truth her way. McCarthy did not capitulate to traditional patriarchal notions of autobiographical content and form; rather, she challenged patriarchal autobiographical traditions in her texts. This thesis examines McCarthy's first autobiographical volume, the 1957 Memories of a Catholic Girlhood, which describes McCarthy's orphanhood in post-World War I America. The introductory chapter …

Despite their incredible success, J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter books, which, now that Hariy is fourteen years old in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire can be comfortably considered YA literature, have had plenty of criticism. The cited faults of the Potter books are many, ranging from pedestrian writing to occult content.

Attacks on YA books are nothing new. For more than a century there have been vocal parents, teachers, and librarians who have attacked books written specifically for teenagers.

It is my contention that writers wll violate their own privacy, that is, reveal their innermost thoughts and dreams, when they are comfortable with the manner and context in which their privacy is broken. Thus, the vehicle for "crossing the line" is important. By discovering their "personal voice" through utilization of the narrative personal essay, writers will be able to break the fear of writing in a voice that reveals the essence of their souls. In October 1876 Gustave Flaubert was engaged in writing what would become perhaps his most well-known and successful piece of short fiction, "A Simple Heart." This narrative dissects the life of an innocent servant woman, ironically named Felicity, who rransfers her love and spiritual devotion from object to object until she finally settles, afrer life's many disappointments, on a stuffed and tattered parrot as the incarnation of her god of love.
