Conversational Implicature In Spoken Discourse : An Analysis Of A Radio Chat Programme, Joyce S. Ariadurray

This study focuses on conversational implicature in the informal spoken discourse of a Malaysian radio chat programme. The study observes that conversation consists of utterances which have literal and non-literal meaning or underlying, intended and implied meaning. The study examines the implied meaning conveyed by the speakers, the inference made by the listeners and the strategies employed. Data is collected by recording sample programmes and the spoken discourse is examined using the Gricean framework, that is, the Cooperative Principle, the four conversational maxims and the violations of the maxims. This research is a study of the use of Malaysian English creative writing in Malaysia. Focusing on the extraction and categorization of Malaysian English lexis used by two Malaysian writers, this research set out to study the extent to which these writers use lexical items from the non-native variety in their prose writings. Language purists have often accused non-native varieties as being the result of a failure of approximation. The deviations in these varieties are seen in a negative light and therefore the non-native varieties are considered inferior to Standard British English. If that is the case, the question arises …

The main goals of this study are firstly to find out how the perceptions of students and teachers regarding classroom processes differ or coincide, and secondly to identify affective factors evidenced in an English proficiency class. These goals are supported by the need to find out learners' perceptions of classroom processes so that we better understand the learners and hopefully become more learner centered. The method used to conduct the study is the diary study method where the diary entries made by students and teacher are analysed using the procedures developed by Progoff (Mcdonough & Mcdonough, 1997). Morris Berman tells the story of his maternal grandfather, who, when he was five years old in 1883 or 1884, was sent to a Jewish elementary school in Belorussia. On the first day of class, the teacher startled the young boy by taking each child's slate and smearing the first two letters of the Hebrew alphabet—aleph and beys—on it in honey. His grandfather's first lesson consisted of eating the letters off the slate.
