By comparing the papers produced by the laboratory teams of Robert Gallo and Jean Luc Montagnier during the AIDS virus hunt, we have an opportunity to discern the fine line between a bold, explicit rhetoric that may convince as well as offend and a bald, reserved rhetoric that may actually conceal important implications. Going too far in either direction may create misunderstandings and ethical dilemmas as will be demonstrated in a textual analysis deepened by an exploration of historical context and interviews with key participants. Modern children’s literature stresses individualism and multiculturalism. The first concerns the push in children’s literature to place more emphasis on developing a child’s individuality, to celebrate individual triumph rather than communal action. This trend seems to have succeeded in its goal. As Perry Nodelman states in The Pleasures of Children’s Literature, “Surprisingly few texts for children celebrate the value of groups of people working together as equals as opposed to the power of individuals controlling groups” (121- 122). Reading Elizabeth Bishop As A Religious Poet, Cheryl Walker

Elizabeth Bishop is usually described as a modernist poet with a skeptical mind. This essay contests the critical tendency to dismiss religion as a serious concern in her poetry, by first challenging the widespread dismissal in the United States of all religious approaches to modern poetry and then challenging the tendency to disclaim attempts to read Elizabeth Bishop in religious terms. The essay includes a close reading of “The End of March” as a text which invites intertextual commentary from a Christian perspective.
