An Eastern Mind Attached To A Western Brain: The Influence Of Zen Buddhism On Jack Kerouac, Yuko Taniguchi

A great American author, Jack Kerouac, loved the Eastern philosophy, Zen Buddhism, which influenced fifteen years of his writing career. The theory of Zen Buddhism taught him what was in and out of human control as well as the true essence of nature. Kerouac reflected on and described his daily life of Zen Buddhism in his novels, and Zen Buddhism certainly became his spiritual inner home for fifteen years. However, searching for a true spirituality never settled him down emotionally; therefore his loss of faith in Zen Buddhism demolished his inner spiritual home, and his struggle began. The endeavour, mentioned in Orts 46, to supply members with an alternative MacDonald magazine until Tim Braithwaite is able to take up the reins did not succeed. It is essential that Orts should have an editor skilled in popular journalism who can stimulate contributions and create a lively magazine. Such people are not easy to find. Tim remains as keen as ever and should be returning before the year's end. Full approval has been given for the sort of developments he is planning.

Adela workshops explore the penetrating spiritual/psychological insights of MacDonald's fairy tales and seek to discover how they can be put to direct practical use in everyday situations. Following the very successful workshop on Adela Cathcart held in Massachusetts in 1995 we hope to hold a similar workshop focusing on The Lost Princess (The Wise Woman) in New Hampshire or Maine in July 1998. Workshops actively involve all participants, there are no lectures. The Lost Princess is particularly suited for such an approach. Narrative Voicings In The Novels Of Roddy Doyle, Larry Poe

Scholars have generally ignored Irish novelist and playwright Roddy Doyle. Little attention has been paid to his narrative techniques or to his development as a novelist. In the American academy, thus far, only one dissertation concerning Doyle’s novels has appeared, written in 1996, by Caramine White, at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. White notes that her dissertation is the first on Doyle and “its basic purpose will be to introduce the novels to the reading public and to convince the reading public that Doyle, although a very popular artist, is also a gifted writer who should be taken …

When I was a child, I wanted to fly. Not in airplanes, helicopters, hot-air balloons, or rockets, but of my own volition - as birds and bats and butterflies flew. I was envious of their ability to fly out of harm's way at a moment's notice and their defiance of gravity's pull. But most of all I wanted to experience the sensation of flight - the lightness, the uplift of air first beneath my arms as I took off and then beneath my horizontal body.
