The Garden Of Eden And The Garden Of Eden: Edenic Imagery In Ernest Hemingway's The Garden Of Eden, Kelly Fisher Lowe

Masters Theses

This thesis attempts to prove that there is a definite link between Ernest Hemingway's last novel The Garden of Eden and the biblical Eden narrative of Genesis 2-3. Through the use of both the novel and the Bible, and many secondary pieces of scholarship, both critical and biographical, the thesis demonstrates a substantial connection between Hemingway's work and the larger issue of religion.

The thesis is arranged in three parts. The study starts with the very general and grows more specific as it progresses.

Zora Neale Hurston: The Voice Of The Goddess, Mella Davis Aug 1991

Zora Neale Hurston: The Voice Of The Goddess, Mella Davis

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Zara Neale Purston has re-emerged as an author of promise due to the re-appraisal of her works led by Alice Walker and Robert Hemenway. In both literary and folklore academic circles, Hurston's work has been reclaimed by African-American female scholars and writers, but still a significant study has yet to be done about her ethnographic contributions to folklore and her farsightedness in fieldwork methodology. This thesis seeks to validate her work as a folklorist, thereby dismissing the charges of popularization and amateurishness by re-examining her work. Mules and Men and Jonah's Gourd Vine are Hurston's two most influential folklore texts …

"In one of the best known moments in Mark Twain's The Innocents Abroad, he visits what he calls " the most celebrated painting in the world- 'The Last Supper' by Leonardo Da Vinci."' Coming as it does in the midst of what is already, barely a quarter of the way into the narrative, an almost frantic gallop through hotels, cathedrals, and museums, the episode represents just one more s top on a hectic itinerary. In Milan a lone, itself sandwiched between a few days each in Genoa and Venice, the travelers already have visited the Duomo and its "7,148 marble …

Inside Or Outside The Whale: George Orwell's Art And Polemic, Richard H. Walker

Masters Theses

This chronological study of the evolution of the works of George Orwell is helpful for the futurist, the citizen awash in groupthink, scholars of standpoint epistemology, of mind and nature, of radical humanism, and others. A former British officer and Spanish revolutionary, he became a Democratic Socialist who believed in intellectual freedom above all and was a champion of the common man. Described as the leading exemplar of the public intellectual, he focused on activism vs passivism (and pacifism), and transforming art and politics into cultural power with mind and nature as the foundation. Like few others, he understood cultural …
