The Mythic Circle
Welcome to The Mythic Circle #12. We apologize for the lateness of this issue. Tina’s triplets (!), bom in March, slowed her down considerably over the past few months. They are now beginning to sleep at night, however, and she anticipates returning to a normal pace soon. We appreciate your patience in the meantime.

Fire And Ice: The Traditional Heroine In The Silmarillion, Sarah Beach
Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature
Defines the Light and Dark heroine, each of which may have a positive or negative aspect. Sees Finduilas and Nienor Níniel as negative, non-active, acted upon; Lúthien and Idril participate “in the course of their heroes’ actions.”

The Scouring Of The Shire As A Hobbit Coming-Of-Age, Jonathon D. Langford
Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature
Contends the events of The Lord of the Rings, culminating in the Scouring of the Shire, demonstrate a coming-of-age for the individual hobbits of the Fellowship, for some social and for others spiritual. The Shire’s response to Sharkey, especially after the Fellowship members return, is a coming-of-age for Hobbit society as a whole.

Always Winter And Never Christmas: Symbols Of Time In Lewis' Chronicles Of Narnia, Nancy-Lou Patterson
Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature
Disagrees with Kilby that the appearance of Father Christmas in The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe is “incongruous.” Sees him as key to Lewis’s understanding of the theological significance of time and eternity.

A Word Of Hope, Paul Nisly
A Word Of Hope, Paul Nisly

Years ago when I was an undergraduate at a small Christian liberal arts college, I was sitting in our chapel auditorium waiting for the sermon. The chaplain walked to the lectern, opened his Bible, and read for us the familiar parable of the Good Samaritan. He ended the reading from Scripture with these words, "The road from Jerusalem to Jericho runs straight through your dorm room." He paused, and we expected the sermon. Then, after a moment of silence, he dismissed us. What power in few words!
I want to argue that words, though limited are God's gift to us …
Wordsworth: The Sense Of History [Review], Michael Fischer
Wordsworth: The Sense Of History [Review], Michael Fischer
English Faculty Research
Alan Liu's Wordsworth: The Sense of History is a large book containing a multitude of materials on a wide range of subjects: Napoleon's military tactics, the indebtedness of Lake District weavers, the social history of criminal punishment, the class structure of Lakeland agricultural society, and the floor plans of late eighteenth-century rural cottages (to name only a few). As if all this were not enough, Liu often apologizes for not providing more, as when he admits that "full proof" of one of his hypotheses "opens to view ... a research field not as fully investigated as others and too vast …
William Blake And The Language Of Adam By Robert N. Essick, James C. Mckusick
William Blake And The Language Of Adam By Robert N. Essick, James C. Mckusick
English Faculty Publications
Review by James C. McKusick. William Blake and the Language of Adam is a welcome addition to our knowledge of the Romantic preoccupation with the mystery of linguistic origins, and it seems destined to become a model of bold, incisive, and carefully researched scholarly analysis of literary and artistic creation from a broad interdisciplinary perspective. Essick's impeccable command of Blake's poetry and visual art is complemented by an extensive knowledge of the history of linguistics and an open-minded (yet critical) understanding of current issues in semiotics, phenomenology, and post-structuralist literary theory. William Blake and the Language of Adam provides an …

The Theology Of Father Brown, Catherine Miles Flynn
The Theology Of Father Brown, Catherine Miles Flynn
Institute for the Humanities Theses
This thesis explores the theological thought of G. K. Chesterton, particularly as it is found in his detective short stories about Father Brown. In his other works (e.g., Orthodoxy, Heretics, and his many books of essays), the theology of Chesterton is obvious. However, in the light, whimsical Father Brown stories the theology expressed is often profound, but underrated if not ignored by his critics. Specific examples from his stories will be used to highlight the theological points within the mysteries.
The life and times of Chesterton are discussed as having highly influenced his thought. His unconventional religious upbringing, in particular, …

Zami: A Portrait Of An Artist As A Black Lesbian, Barbara Dibernard
Zami: A Portrait Of An Artist As A Black Lesbian, Barbara Dibernard
Department of English: Faculty Publications
As feminist critics, we cannot continue to ignore differences in race, sexuality, and class when we write about women; we should heed Adrienne Rich's critique of her own earlier work, that she will never again write of the "faceless, raceless, classless category of 'all women.'" Aware that my work will be partial and limited, I would like to explore Audre Lorde's Zami as a portrait of an artist as a black lesbian. In doing so, I hope to suggest areas where we must open up our conception of the female Kunstlerroman so that we are taking account of Lorde's black …
