The Sacred Circle: Ostension In Native American Hoop Dancing, Emma George
The Sacred Circle: Ostension In Native American Hoop Dancing, Emma George
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
This thesis examines the role of the semiotic concept ostension in folk dance, specifically in Native American hoop dance. Although the discipline of folklore is well-versed in ostension, folk dance has not been examined through this lens. I argue that dance is a form of ostension, of demonstrating a narrative, and this is especially apparent within Native American hoop dancing. I begin with a brief history of Native Americans in North America before discussing the origins of powwows, intertribal culture, and hoop dance. I then look at both the sacred nature and material culture of the modern hoop dance before …

Research in progress for ENGL 1301: Composition 1
Faculty Mentor: Lisa Roy-Davis, Ph.D.
The following paper represents exemplary research work from English 1301, the first course in the two-semester composition sequence at Collin College. English 1301 introduces the concept of academic research as inquiry by teaching students to ask focused open-ended questions and then using the library and online resources to help them conceptualize and test possible answers. From Wordsworth’S Poetic Problem To Puzzleless Interactive Fiction, Timothy Wilcox
From Wordsworth’S Poetic Problem To Puzzleless Interactive Fiction, Timothy Wilcox
Electronic Literature Organization Conference 2020
Steve Meretzky’s 1985 A Mind Forever Voyaging functions as the first major text-adventure which does not structure its interactions around challenging, often cryptic, puzzles. Instead, the work allows readers to observe and record social change leisurely, requiring one to match wits with one’s imagination more so than the computer. This development of puzzleless interactive fiction has had forward-leaning influence. Chris Klimas’ development of Twine traces back in design philosophy to Meretzky’s innovations here, and autobiographic explorations in the medium develop then from this shift away from puzzles toward more subjective experiences. In addition to this forward influence, however, I trace …

Singapore English is among the many new Englishes which have emerged across the world. Recently, linguists such as Wee (2014) have stated that Singlish should be allowed to be used as it reflects the true cultural identity of Singaporeans and this has led to the initiation of the Speak Good Singlish Movement. Singapore’s bilingual …
Examining Fatherhood Through Historical Empathy In Tristram Shandy, Marygrace King
Examining Fatherhood Through Historical Empathy In Tristram Shandy, Marygrace King
The Criterion
Laurence Sterne’s eighteenth-century novel The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy follows the tangential musings of Tristram Shandy — musings so roundabout and convoluted that they force modern readers either to eyerolls of frustration or to a reconceived sense of humor. Within this essay, I explore the character of Tristram’s father, Walter Shandy, through a lens of historical empathy. To twenty-first century standards, Walter’s fatherhood is lacking and distant, even uncaring; yet when viewed through the lens of an eighteenth-century perspective, Walter’s motivations and eccentricities begin to make sense in the context of eighteenth-century mortality rates. I explore his unorthodox …
