The Poetry Of Robert Southwell, Therese Lentfoehr Apr 1933

The Poetry Of Robert Southwell, Therese Lentfoehr

Bachelors’ Theses

Thus did Grace speak on that harp of God, which was the soul of Robert Southwell, and so ineffable was the music awakened therefrom that its exquisite echo has come down to us through the gloom of three centuries. His life was at once that of a poet, a priest, and a martyr, of the age of Elisabeth, that haughty and dread wielder of the English sceptre. Of his life and writings, sad to tell, only too little has been known, and in the recordings of literature he has been either "overlooked, or else buried in a homely foot-note."

Newman The Master Prose Writer, Aline Pepin Jul 1932

Newman The Master Prose Writer, Aline Pepin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis, submitted to Xavier University in partial fulfillment of requirements for a Bachelor of Arts degree in English in 1932, presents a biographical and critical study of John Henry Newman, examining his life and identifying him as the master prose writer of the Victorian Age. Pepin traces Newman's early education, his fellowship at Oriel College, his ordination as an Anglican deacon, and his rise to leadership within the Oxford Movement through the "Tracts for the Times," before turning to his 1845 conversion to Roman Catholicism, his ordination as a Catholic priest, his founding of the Birmingham Oratory, his tenure …

A Thesis On Shakespeare, Literature's Master Dramatist, Hilda Mary Armstrong

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis, submitted in partial fulfillment of requirements for a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education, presents a survey of the life and dramatic works of William Shakespeare, situated within the broader history of English drama. The thesis traces English drama's origins in medieval Catholic Church miracle plays and moralities through the development of Bible drama, interludes, and early English comedy and tragedy, before turning to the Elizabethan stage on which Shakespeare wrote.

A biographical account of Shakespeare's life at Stratford-on-Avon and London is followed by a description of the physical conditions of the Elizabethan theatre, including stage construction, scenery, …

The purpose of this work is to acquaint the reader with the ideas . presented by John Dryden in his dramatic criticism. Women Characters In Dickens' Early Novels, Virginia Anna Mogensen May 1932

Women Characters In Dickens' Early Novels, Virginia Anna Mogensen

Bachelors’ Theses

In this thesis on Women Characters in Dickens' Early Novels, I have endeavored to deal with the importance of the women as characters. This necessitates a consideration of their sources in real life, their number and description, influence upon the novel’s outcome, social class, characteristics, and relationship with the men characters. The source of Dickens’ characters is a chapter in itself. The other points mentioned above are dealt with in chapters entitled: Pickwick Papers, Oliver Twist, Nicholas Nickleby, Barnaby Rudge, and David Copperfield. These are the most important of Dickens’ early novels. They are treated consecutively, and the women …

T.O. Davus And J.C. Mangan In Their Relation To The Forty Eight Movement, Ann Brigid Costello May 1932

T.O. Davus And J.C. Mangan In Their Relation To The Forty Eight Movement, Ann Brigid Costello

Bachelors’ Theses

The relation of Davis and Mangan as men of letters to the "48" Movement in Irish Literature is a subject of some importance because for the first time in the history of Anglo-Irish literature we find a movement stressing what was national rather than what was political . Anglo-Irish literature previous to this period of which we are writing (1840-48) belongs to the history of English literature rather than that of Irish literature...

Criticism Of The English Novel In The Eighteenth Century, Natalie Blyn May 1932

Criticism Of The English Novel In The Eighteenth Century, Natalie Blyn

Bachelors’ Theses

The difficulty which presents itself to anyone writing a work such as this is the determination of the standard of criticism that can be applied to the novels of the eighteenth century. It is for this reason that it is necessary to make a rather intensive study of the biographers of the novelists of that period and the men who devoted a great amount of time and labor to this task. Merely to read the novels is not sufficient. For, although one can obtain a fairly accurate determination of the author's purpose and and ideas, one can never be very …

The Catholic Spirit In Modern Poetry, Anna Marie Lacaze Jan 1932

The Catholic Spirit In Modern Poetry, Anna Marie Lacaze

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis, submitted to Xavier University in partial fulfillment of requirements for a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education in 1932, traces the revival of Catholic spirit in modern English poetry following its suppression after the Protestant Reformation. Lacaze argues that this revival began with the Oxford Movement of the nineteenth century and its leader, John Henry Newman, whose conversion to Catholicism and subsequent writing exercised a lasting influence on English literary and religious culture.

The thesis opens with an account of Newman's life, his role in the Oxford Movement, his 1845 conversion, and his major prose works, including "Apologia …

The Authenticity Of Benson's Historical Novels, Estelle T. Bell Jan 1931

The Authenticity Of Benson's Historical Novels, Estelle T. Bell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the historical accuracy of Robert Hugh Benson's historical novels "The King's Achievement," "Come Rack! Come Rope!," and "By What Authority," arguing that despite their fictional romantic elements, these novels authentically portray the historical relationship between the English and Catholic Churches during the reigns of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. Bell opens by distinguishing the aims of the historian from those of the novelist, then situates Benson biographically as a convert from Anglicanism to Catholicism whose religious sensibility shaped his literary work.

Drawing on the "Lingard-Belloc History of England" as an authoritative historical source, the thesis traces the …

The Works Of George Sand As An Interpretation Of Her Life And Personality, Bernita Salmon Jan 1931

The Works Of George Sand As An Interpretation Of Her Life And Personality, Bernita Salmon

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Although there is some difference of opinion today concerning George Sand's position in French literature, it is a definite fact that she was an important literary figure during her lifetime. By important, I do not necessarily mean that she was always popular, for she received a great deal of unfavorable criticism; but her name was famous name, her works were generally the talked-of books, and her influence was feared. "George Sand" attached to a new publication brought immediate interest and heated discussion. Commercial men capitalized on this fact, for we are told that a certain in Rafin named a new …

Sixty Literary Years: The Foundation Of The George Eliot Fellowship, Kathleen Adams Nov 1930

Sixty Literary Years: The Foundation Of The George Eliot Fellowship, Kathleen Adams

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

When the George Eliot Fellowship was born sixty years ago, the infant had emerged after a labour of some 25 years. A.F. Cross, its founder, had been editor of Nuneaton newspapers since 1895. For much of that time he had been campaigning for a memorial to George Eliot in her native town, but had met with apathy at every turn. For two weeks during the summer of 1930, Mr. Cross handed over the Editorial chair of the Nuneaton Chronicle to a Cambridge undergraduate, to give the young man an opportunity to gain an inside knowledge of newspaper production. His young …
