Shelley's Prometheus Unbound : A Critical Analysis And Interpretation, Emily Carol Braxton
Shelley's Prometheus Unbound : A Critical Analysis And Interpretation, Emily Carol Braxton
Master's Theses
As a basis for Prometheus Unbound, which he completed in 1819 and which is his masterpiece, Shelley used Aeschylus' Prometheus Bound. Shelley used the Prometheus myth to express his own ideas about present evils and his hopes for man's future as a result of his belief that man was capable of perfectibility.

A Comparison Of Two Medieval Story-Tellers : Geoffrey Chaucer And John Gower, Margaret Joan Byerly
A Comparison Of Two Medieval Story-Tellers : Geoffrey Chaucer And John Gower, Margaret Joan Byerly
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to compare the narrative and framing techniques used by Geoffrey Chaucer and John Gower. These authors were selected for several reasons. Being contemporaries, they lived through the days of the reign of Richard II, his deposition, and the accession of Henry IV. This was a time change: the age of chivalry and true knighthood was ending; the middle class was establishing commerce, towns, guilds; openly and violently the peasants were beginning to reject their servile positions; the corruption within the organized church was being publicly exposed, and efforts, believed heretical by some, were being …
The Development Of Twentieth Century Criticisms Of The Canterbury Tales, Donald Keith Gosnell
The Development Of Twentieth Century Criticisms Of The Canterbury Tales, Donald Keith Gosnell
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
It will be the purpose of this thesis to survey and to evaluate twentieth-century criticisms of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. Because the topic is so broad, it is necessary to find methods of limiting the subject so that it· may be adequately covered herein. This paper will be limited primarily to books published on the topic under consideration. To cover all the work in periodical literature would go beyond the scope of this study. Perhaps that task can be covered by someone else.

Dryden's Adaptations Of Shakespeare, Massie C. Stinson Jr.
Master's Theses
It is the purpose of this study to discuss Dryden's adaptations of Shakespeare's The Tempest, Antony and Cleopatra, and Troilus and Cressida. As a background for this study, Restoration drama will be discussed from the standpoint of the following criteria: relationship to Elizabethan drama; Restoration audiences, theaters, and fashion; adaptations, primarily of Shakespeare; D’Avenant, Dryden, and heroic drama; and finally, English opera in the Restoration period. The first of the five chapters in this discussion will be concerned with the items listed above. Succeeding chapters in order will discuss Dryden's adaptations of Shakespeare’s The Tempest, Antony and Cleopatra, Troilus and …
The Motif Of The Grotesque In The Alexandria Quartet Of Lawrence Durrell, Barbara J. Marta
The Motif Of The Grotesque In The Alexandria Quartet Of Lawrence Durrell, Barbara J. Marta
Graduate Student Research Papers
Lawrence Durrell has written The Alexandria Quartet in a form he considers modern and which he has labeled a "continuum." In this continuum the first three novels of the quartet occur at the same place in time and treat the same characters and incidents with the point of view and interpretation changing in each of the novels; the fourth novel then constitutes a sequel. Throughout this general framework of abstract time established by the continuum, the motif of the grotesque is woven, constantly evident, attempting to force an awareness of the sordid aspects of humanity as well as those of …
An Evaluation Of The Autobiographical Interpretation Of Samson Agonistes, Edward P. Crockett
An Evaluation Of The Autobiographical Interpretation Of Samson Agonistes, Edward P. Crockett
Master's Theses
Certainly, every reader of Samson Agonistes who is at all familiar with the circumstances of Milton's life, his thought, and the history of his times has been attracted by obvious parallels between 'the poet and certain aspects or his dramatic creation, and he may understandably assume that the presentation or the sufferings of Samson constitute intentional, hidden autobiography. To assume even the obvious, however, is something too blithely done. A little research into this area of Miltoniana will reveal to him that scholarly opinion concerning Samson Agonistes and autobiography is greatly varied and that some scholars are inclined not only …

The Problem Of Satan In Milton's Paradise Lost, Jeanne Saunders
The Problem Of Satan In Milton's Paradise Lost, Jeanne Saunders
Master's Theses
By 1641 John Milton had prepared a rather detailed outline for a tragic drama, Adam Unparadised. The design was to take form and grow, not as a religious drama, but as a magnificent epic poem which would "assert Eternal Providence,/And justify the ways of God to men" (I.25-26). In the original design for the drama the character and person of Satan did not constitute a basis for sustained interest. However, when Paradise Lost was finished in 1665, this was no longer the case; Satan, as an historical figure treated by the poetic and religious imagination of Milton, emerged as one …

The Theme Of Isolation In Four Novels Of Daniel Defoe, Mildred Merle Dillman
The Theme Of Isolation In Four Novels Of Daniel Defoe, Mildred Merle Dillman
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Daniel Defoe, separated from the society of the majority of English people of his time by his religion and his low social status, was concerned with isolation in the lives of the characters in his novels. The solitude of Robinson Crusoe has been frequently discussed, but the characters in other novels have not been studied in much detail nor have the characters been studied as a group of isolated with similar characteristics.
The purpose of the following study is to determine what characteristics Defoe’s isolates have in common, what attitude Defoe had toward solitude and the isolates, and what effect …

A Comparative Study Of Caroline & Restoration Drama, Jane Pfingston
A Comparative Study Of Caroline & Restoration Drama, Jane Pfingston
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The original plan for research was to make a comparative study of plays written in the twenty year span before the theaters closed and in the twenty year period after the theaters reopened - a comparative study of Jacobean and Restoration drama. However, the availability of play copies limited the number of plays read and the authors used. Therefore the twenty year plan proved to be quite cumbersome and the plays were reduced roughly to a twelve year period. The subject for research then became "A Comparative Study of Caroline and Restoration Drama."

The Orc Symbol In William Blake's Works, Michael James Finnigan
The Orc Symbol In William Blake's Works, Michael James Finnigan
Graduate Student Research Papers
A study of Orc, Blake's symbol for energy, suggests several different hypotheses. This paper intends to test the hypothesis that Orc is a force. With the use of illustrations and explications, Orc becomes more clearly a symbol of Blake's imaginative form. This energy will be seen at each level of Blake's visions, each different psychological stage, and at the highest level, poetic imagination. Thus, as the creator creates, the creation becomes the molded form of the creator's imagination.
A Critical Analysis Of The Characters Of Isabel And Madame Merle And Their Conflict In Henry James's The Portrait Of A Lady, Thomas Raymond Alderson
A Critical Analysis Of The Characters Of Isabel And Madame Merle And Their Conflict In Henry James's The Portrait Of A Lady, Thomas Raymond Alderson
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The opening scene of The Portrait of a Lady takes place upon the broad, sunlit lawns of Gardencourt. Yet, even in this expansive setting, the most essential character in the novel, the protagonist, is, curiously, no more than a narrow, shadowy speculation symbolized by a few odd words found in a telegram of dubious value. The only worth of these words comes in the amount of curiosity they can arouse in the other characters and in the reader. For it appears that, with this slow but significantly unusual means of introducing Isabel, the author intends her for more than a …

A Study Of The Aesthetic Statements In The Poetry Of Keats And Shakespeare, Leanna Boysko
A Study Of The Aesthetic Statements In The Poetry Of Keats And Shakespeare, Leanna Boysko
Student Scholarship
This study explores the aesthetic and moral statements embedded within the poetry of John Keats and William Shakespeare, operating under the classical and Renaissance assumption that art exists for both instruction and delight. The author employs a methodology combining the history of ideas with close literary explication to demonstrate that these poets use their works as a means of knowing and living, rather than as ends in themselves. The analysis begins by examining the evolution of the muse, tracing how both writers move from conventional classical invocations toward more personal and transcendent sources of inspiration, such as Shakespeare’s fair young …

The author argues that poetic truth is implicit, emerging only from a comprehensive study of a poem's parts rather than explicit summaries. By employing a methodology that combines the history of ideas with close literary explication, the text examines how both poets move beyond conventional muses toward more transcendent sources of inspiration.
Central to the analysis is the role of the muse and the "onlie begetter". In …
