The Journal of the Assembly for Expanded Perspectives on Learning

In his essay Two Kinds of Thinking Carl Jung describes direct and indirect thinking. Associated with language, direct thinking’s premier ability is parsing and defining reality so that we might work on that reality and act in the world. Associated with imagery, dreaming, and story telling, indirect thinking taps the realm of mythos where we dwell in fantasies and paradoxes. Indirect thinking is neither a contradiction nor denial of rationality. Rather, it is thinking that operates by a different logic, one capable of offering different insights, different versions of possible realities.

Jung’s two kinds of thinking reflect a …

Successful Blunders: Reflection, Deflection, Teaching, Devan Cook

The Journal of the Assembly for Expanded Perspectives on Learning

Often we expect students' experience with assignments to reflect our own or those of previous students, but we may blunder when we base our teaching on past successes. By deflecting such assignments and constructing unexpected identities, students and instructors alike learn and teach.

The Accidental Curriculum, Terrance Riley Jan 2002

The Accidental Curriculum, Terrance Riley

The Journal of the Assembly for Expanded Perspectives on Learning

True learning—learning which results in some permanent cognitive change—is far too unpredictable to be controlled by format curricular designs. The formal curriculum of English studies is valuable largely as a stage setting for educational accidents.

Millennium Moments: An Integrated Literature Unit, Institute For The Development Of Gifted Education, Ricks Center For Gifted Children, University Of Denver

Ricks Curriculum Units Series

As we begin the new millennium, with its recent challenges and complexities, many educators are looking back to the twentieth century as a rich source of subject matter for their students to investigate. Further, most state standards call for an exploration of "modern" history. Certainly, there are numerous curricular materials that provide historical summaries of the century. Indeed, Millennium Moments is best used in conjunction with resources that chronicle modern world history and provide contextual information. It is our hope that this interdisciplinary unit will serve to engage students firsthand in the discoveries, personalities, accomplishments, and cultural events of the …

Raising Cultural Awareness In The Elementary Classroom Through African-American Children's Literature, Kirsten Seebeck Jan 2002

Raising Cultural Awareness In The Elementary Classroom Through African-American Children's Literature, Kirsten Seebeck

Graduate Research Papers

This research project topic was selected because of the need for raised cultural awareness in elementary classrooms, as indicated in current research findings. I chose African-American literature because in this region of the United States, Iowa in particular, the classrooms tend to be largely homogenous. Children who are from African-American descent find themselves to be in the minority in their classroom settings.

These children are not seeing many other children like themselves in their school community. It is therefore important that they see themselves in the literature shared within this community, in order to help them to relate to their …

Morris Berman tells the story of his maternal grandfather, who, when he was five years old in 1883 or 1884, was sent to a Jewish elementary school in Belorussia. On the first day of class, the teacher startled the young boy by taking each child's slate and smearing the first two letters of the Hebrew alphabet—aleph and beys—on it in honey. His grandfather's first lesson consisted of eating the letters off the slate. The symbolism of this act is complex, Berman muses, but central to the ritual is the belief that what is real must be taken into oneself, ingested: …

Curriculum, Pedagogy, And Teacherly Ethos, Marshall W. Gregory Jan 2001

Curriculum, Pedagogy, And Teacherly Ethos, Marshall W. Gregory

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

In considering how curriculum and teaching influence education, it is revealing to note that most faculty members treat curriculum the way bankers treat investments. They generally spend much time, planning, and careful thought on curricular matters-reasoning here, analyzing there, relying on experience, and carefully considering both the long-term and short-term dividends of knowledge - but when it comes to teaching, many faculty members operate less like bankers and more like barnstormers, flying by the seat of their pants and guiding themselves primarily by instinct or by repeating whatever worked yesterday.

Buku-Buku Sastera Terbitan Dbp Sarawak 1988-1998 : Penerimaan Dan Kedudukannya Di Sarawak, Hazami Jahari

Student Works (2000-2009)

The community's interest towards literature is seen to be on the decline. Neither do they seem to understand nor appreciate the significance of literature in molding the ways of thoughts of the people. This is due to the ever increasing cost of living, wide range of entertainment media and the government policy. The role and significance of literature no longer becomes predominant. Thus this study aims at reassessing the status of literature in the daily life of the community, especially the students and teachers of secondary schools in Sarawak. The methods being applied are through questionnaires focusing on the statistics …

Conversational Implicature In Child Language : A Malaysian Case Study, Sharon Lan Fong Yap Jan 2001

Conversational Implicature In Child Language : A Malaysian Case Study, Sharon Lan Fong Yap

Student Works (2000-2009)

Conversational lmplicature (CI) is a form of pragmatic indirectness in language use that is widely considered to be an adult discourse phenomenon. However, detection of its use in children's discourse has led the researcher to embark on a study to document evidence of this phenomenon by investigating IO subjects aged 3 to 7 years. The participant observation method was adopted for this study and the data collected was presented as noted verbatim. The 'as is' nature of the data presented in Chapter Four served to document the children's ability to both extricate and generate applied meaning. Furthermore, by applying adult …

Learner-Teacher Perceptions Of Classroom Processes In An English Proficiency Class, Cordelia Mason Jan 2001

Learner-Teacher Perceptions Of Classroom Processes In An English Proficiency Class, Cordelia Mason

Student Works (2000-2009)

The main goals of this study are firstly to find out how the perceptions of students and teachers regarding classroom processes differ or coincide, and secondly to identify affective factors evidenced in an English proficiency class. These goals are supported by the need to find out learners' perceptions of classroom processes so that we better understand the learners and hopefully become more learner centered. The method used to conduct the study is the diary study method where the diary entries made by students and teacher are analysed using the procedures developed by Progoff (Mcdonough & Mcdonough, 1997). Seventeen subjects were …

Imperfection: The Will-To-Control And The Struggle Of Letting Go, W. Keith Duffy

The Journal of the Assembly for Expanded Perspectives on Learning

As I found myself beginning to appropriate my students' writing more and more, I wondered if this was evidence of a spiritual imbalance—an unwillingness to acknowledge my own imperfection as a teacher and human being.
