The narrative introduction to the graduate catalogue at the state university where I work probably reads pretty much like the one at your college or university. The program of study for the masters degree specifies that inservice graduate students are to engage in an extensive study of content- related literature, theory, and research. Despite the rhetoric of graduate catalogs, teachers who enter graduate school programs begin their advanced studies, expecting- and sometimes vociferously demanding- coursework that will provide them with a practical framework for teaching English language arts in secondary schools. All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examined traditional reading instruction and concept mapping reading instruction using reading and survey data collected from English as Foreign Language (EFL) students in China. Its purpose was to investigate whether there was any difference between these instructional types in three reading areas: main idea reading, subordinate idea reading and reading between the lines. Forty first-year students were randomly chosen from two universities in Southwestern China. They were equally divided into the two instructional methods. 「何壽基學校英語動力營」旨在透過創造一個輕鬆有趣的環境讓學生活學活用大部份已在平日課堂上學到的英語，其主要目標爲：

1. 透過各種富趣味性的英語活動，培養學生的自信心及主動學習性，從而推動學生多聽及多說英語。
2. 透過團體活動，讓學生發揮團結精神及促進個人成長，並借助團隊精神改變個人行爲。
3. 透過比賽形式，激發學生的奮鬥心，同時學習「勝不驢、敗不餒」的道理，並透過建立互相扶助及鼓勵的小組文化，讓小組內較弱的組員能跟上進度。
4. 透過讓學生安排自己的起居飲食，訓練獨立性及自律性。
5. 創造一個給長者與學生互動的平台，促進長幼共融。

爲評估「何壽基學校英語動力營」的成效，本屮心推行了一項調查硏究，探討參與此計訓的學生在以下數方面的轉變：英語能力、知識的增進、個人的發展和團體合作。此外，亦包括了學生對這個「動力營」的評價與意見。

In this article, we have made the case that multimodal pedagogies that include drawing, photography and drama have significant potential for enhancing teachers’ understanding of the way English is incorporated into students’ lives and how students can improve their understanding and use of the English language. In many ways, multimodal pedagogies represent a hybridization of indigenous and contemporary forms of communication. Drawings, as Vygotsky (1 12-1 13) notes, are children’s earliest representations of experience and stimulate their narrative impulse to create stories. By complementing such drawings with written narratives, teachers might encourage younger children to experiment not only with diverse …

Leaping into Uncertainty: Teaching and Learning beyond Logic and Reason

In 1846, Soren Kierkegaard set forth the limits of logical systems and objective truth, neither of which can shed light on the important questions of life. “In logical systems,” the nineteenth century Danish philosophy argues, “nothing may be incorporated that has a relationship to existence, that is not indifferent to existence” (141) because a logical system is purely speculative. Existence is an actuality, a doing. Logical systems cannot account for the necessary leap in life between almost doing something—thinking about doing something (and Kierkegaard’s example is taking the …

It was over a decade ago when Rudine Sims Bishop (1992) prophetically dubbed Angela Johnson as possibly one of "the most prominent AfricanAmerican literary artists of the next generation" (616). At the time she had four picture books to her credit, but the following year she would publish her debut young adult novel, Toning the Sweep. From there, a number of other award-winners would follow and the total of young adult books would increase to eleven and counting. To date, Johnson has three Coretta Scott King Awards, a Michael L.
