The thesis is about the phenomenon of "artist-company" -- commercial methodologies employed by contemporary artists are determining their artworks. Taking XuZhen as a case study, it attempts to understand the phenomenon through aspects including art autonomy and institutional theories. It argues that "artist-company" is a continuation of institutional critique.

Among the voices opposed to the Russo–Japanese war of 1904–5 was that of the Russian writer Leo Tolstoy, who published an essay titled Bethink Yourselves, arguing against hostilities. The essay was translated and published in Japanese, but gained little traction among the intelligentsia in Japan. There was, however, one strong voice that supported Tolstoy’s ideas: that of the religious studies scholar Anesaki Masaharu. Anesaki’s response to Tolstoy’s essay was at once a commentary about the spiritual state of Japan at the turn of the century and also a veiled criticism of the Japanese government.

Relative clauses have been researched and found to be one of the more difficult English grammar items for people who speak English as a Second Language (henceforth, ESL) and people who use English as a Foreign Language (henceforth, EFL). In particular, objective relative clauses are one of the most challenging items for English learners. The primary objective of this research project is to show varying degrees of textual and semantic contributions that semantic density and grammatical metaphors make in the way that TOEFL iBT reading sections and Japanese EFL textbooks are used. This research is conducted from two theoretical perspectives within the theory of Systemic Functional Linguistics. The first analysis is to investigate logical and semantic relationships within clause complexes in order to identify structural variations and their textual distributions. Why did the Chinese government begin promoting the internationalization of its currency, the renminbi, after the 2008 global financial crisis? Only a few years earlier, Beijing balked at U.S. demands to reform its currency regime, which would require dismantling many of the country's long-preferred tools for promoting growth and maintaining domestic stability. Similar concerns about the dilution of monetary policy independence motivated previous rising economies Germany and Japan to proactively discourage the internationalization of their currencies. The Rashomon effect is a sociological term that originated from the 1950 film Rashomon directed by Akira Kurosawa. It explains a story being told from multiple vantage points, but never gives an unbiasedly true version of the tale at its conclusion. By telling the story from multiple perspectives, characters who would originally be silenced such as the bride are given a voice. Telling the story in this format allows the audience to consider peoples’ perspectives that differ from their own. Thinking About The 'Ming China' Anew: The Ethnocultural Space In A Diverse Empire-With Special Reference To The 'Miao Territory', Yonglin Jiang

By examining the cultural identity of China's Ming dynasty, this essay challenges two prevalent perceptions of the Ming in existing literature: to presume a monolithic socio-ethno-cultural Chinese empire and to equate the Ming Empire with China (Zhongguo, the “middle kingdom”). It shows that the Ming constructed China as an ethnocultural space rather than a political entity. In essence, China was defined as a Han domain that the Han people inhabited and where Han values were produced, practiced, and preserved in contrast to those of non-Han “barbarians,” be they domestic or foreign. The “Great Ming”—the dynastic title—cannot be confused with China, …

In Lucky, The Voyeurs, and Truth is Fragmentary, cartoonist Gabrielle Bell adopts comics panels of approximately the same size as a passport photo. The comics draw a kind of auto-fiction that marries the fantastical and the autobiographical, frequently eliding musings on her status as a woman writer, a comics writer, and a traveler. These are all categories that share the distinction of being “threshold” or liminal categories. This chapter takes Bell’s presentation of identity as an object of formal and phenomenological inquiry. 《山海經》一書合共十八篇，內容包含千奇百怪，以異類為本的記載。前人研究《山海經》，主要分為經文表達的文化研究、以母題分類之研究及專門研究所載的神異動物三類。治水神話隸屬於母題研究下，是較為廣泛的母題研究之一。學者研究治水神話之時，正面大多以鯀禹入手，反面則主要以共工作為研究對象。兩派相爭，所涉及的神、人、事必定多如繁星。九頭蛇相柳，便為其中一員。作為能與上古神明爭鬥，怒撞不周山之共工臣子，其神力想必不容小覷。然而《山海經》對此名猛員大將只有隻字片語式的記載，亦鮮有學術論文就其作討論。故本文將以九頭蛇相柳作為主要研究對象，對其進行深入考釋。

論文將以三個部分深入分析九頭蛇相柳，先以圖騰崇拜入手，探討古人對蛇圖騰之崇拜而誕生的蛇神信仰；第二部分則以變形及怪誕入手，分析神異動物九頭蛇的外型特點；最後藉《山海經》對相柳之載，從而探討相柳的神格，剖析其神力之大。

Determinism And The Problem Of Individual Freedom In Li Zehou’S Thought, Andrew Lambert

Li Zehou’s work can be understood as an account of a Chinese modernity, a vision for Chinese society that seeks to integrate three distinct philosophical approaches. These are Chinese history and culture, which Li understands as largely Confucian; Marxism, which has exerted such influence on a modernizing China; and Western learning more generally, as expressed by figures such as Immanuel Kant and Sigmund Freud. Li also frequently expresses the hope that a Chinese modernity will be one in which the importance of the individual is recognized, and rights and freedoms upheld (e.g., 2006, p. 182). 《論語》「克己復禮為仁」一章，為顏淵向孔夫子問仁。自來眾家看法，爭議不斷。本文試以清人江聲之說重探此章的意思。江聲之說上承其師惠棟，以文字訓詁為據，解讀當中義理。更考慮到語境問題，從顏淵的性格、處世態度的角度，思考孔夫子如何回答顏淵對仁的提問，一貫因材施教。最後，本文將梳理及綜合分析孔夫子如何向其他學生解釋仁，從宏觀全面的角度審視「仁」的中心思想，從而分析江聲之說是否合乎仁的整體思想。

江聲詮釋「克己復禮為仁」為：透過親身肩任修身以歸本，就是仁。相較各家，江聲之說較合乎原文意思。歸納箇中原因有三：第一，江聲對「克」、「己」二字的解釋帶有主動積極踐「仁」之義，更合整章的意思及仁的思想。第二，江聲以訓詁的方法詮解整章，在客觀漢學基礎上作考據、求義理。第三，其詮解能緊扣顏淵的語境，並扣緊「仁」與「禮」之間關係，亦兼容各家之說。

廢名（本名馮文炳）小說中的詩意或禪意表達總是為研究者稱頌，遣詞用句有其獨特風格。他一生創作了兩部長篇小說，《橋》和《莫須有先生傳》（下稱《莫》）。雖長篇小說數目遠遠不及其短篇小說，但已經展現出兩種截然不同的創作風格。簡而言之，前者比後者要晦澀很多（像《莫》這種帶點遊戲筆墨的可能更難懂），篇幅結構鬆散，一如普遍評論家的意見，像散文式小說。

關於作者的作品風格、意象、主題等表現，學界已有不少討論。本文嘗試把焦點回歸故事本身，重新審視前人研究中被忽略的人物和細節，輔以研究作者的創作觀等其他因素，觀察《橋》的故事或其變化可能隱含的意義。儘管作者寫長篇小說的技巧有所欠缺，但當中對於「人」和「苦難」的思考，卻是值得關注的。

In recent years, far right-wing political parties have gained power around the world. Far-right movements build a populist, anti-establishment support base through the use of ethno-nationalism and xenophobic policies and slogans. This article applies the models and party frames used to study European far-right movements and applies them to the case of the Liberal Democratic Party of Japan (LDP), a party whose policies under prime ministers Junichiro Koizumi and Shinzo Abe have pushed the party from having a center-right stance to having more of a far-right nationalist and populist one. When the Qing dynasty fell in 1912, Chinese nationalist and communist forces fought to gain power. Both groups looked to build their base of support among the socially repressed, which included women and peasants. Thus, women’s emancipation became a central issue, and it remained primary until 1924, during an era known as the May Fourth Movement (Lan and Fong 1999, p. ix). Nationalist and communist forces both promised women better lives, in terms of education, love in marriage, value in family life, a role in the revolution and social activism, and emancipation. During the past ten years, China has actively promoted its Confucius Institute (CI), a program of instruction in Chinese language and culture for college students outside of China. The program’s stated purpose is to meet an existing demand for education in Chinese language and culture, with the intent of strengthening relationships between China and other countries in order to promote a more harmonious world. On 8 May 2002, shocking images of five North Korean refugees at a Japanese consulate in northeast China were captured. Although two members of the party—both men—successfully made it inside the consulate, two women and a child were dragged away from the gate of their safe haven by Chinese police (Gittings 2002). All five individuals were eventually detained—and though their fates remain unknown, it is likely they were immediately deported to North Korea, possibly the worst outcome for any North Korean defector.

Until the seventeenth century, it was exceedingly rare to find art depicting everyday Japanese life. It was only when artists began painting scenes from the street life in Yoshiwara, the red light district in the capital city of the time, that the popular school of art known as “Ukiyo-e,” a highly fashionable style of Japanese woodblock prints, was formed (J.E.L. 1914, pp. 1–4). Emerging from an era of Chinese philosophy that was against anything Japanese, early examples of Ukiyo-e were rare until Hishikawa Moronobu discovered a way to mass-produce the art through woodblock engraving prints, which ultimately established Ukiyo-e as …

This long-form journalistic piece is about radioactive forests in Yamakiya, Fukushima Prefecture, Japan, and how locals are dealing with it. Residents of Yamakiya were forced to evacuate their village in April 2011 following an explosion at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.

One Yamakiyan, Hidekatsu Ouchi, stepped into the role of community leader and is the focus of this story. He hopes Yamakiya can use the radiation, rather than condemning it. Ouchi’s devotion to his community is connected to the Japanese concept of furusato, which refers to an individual’s obligation and nostalgia for family, community and place. The story asserts …
