Where the Landscape Inspires the Lines (https://yoshinoki.info/) explores the intersection of premodern Japanese literature and digital humanities (DH) through an innovative online platform for reading, annotating, and coding. Centered on Yoshino ki 吉野記 (A Record of Yoshino), a seventeenth-century Japanese poetic travelogue authored by the poet and courtier Asukai Masaaki 飛鳥井雅章 (1611–1679), this project offers an interactive and immersive experience designed to meet the academic and research needs of a diverse group of scholars and students while advocating for a multilingual approach that challenges anglophone-centric biases often found in DH. Any form of audio-visual media utilises specific stylistic elements in order to represent the reality within which the media form is situated. These representations occur through the language and iconography of the media form, which works on stereotypical features that the audience can easily identify. Forming a pivotal part of the media, these representations must be rendered in the translations for a linguistically and culturally diverse audience. Audio-Visual Translation (AVT) has been used since the 1930s to make media accessible. This study explores the underlying motivations of consumers’ usage of online dating applications after the breakup of romantic relationships. The experiences of young-adult consumers who went through post-breakup grief are investigated through in-depth interviews. Findings resulted in twelve categories of motivations that participating consumers had regarding their usage of dating apps, in relation to managing the grief after breakup. Motivations are grouped under the categories of coping, updating, and desiring. Moreover, findings also demonstrated diverging pathways in using dating apps for emotional resolution. The study contributes to our understanding of dating app usage by highlighting important insights from consumers who …

Serious Music with Bea Witkin is a site-specific audio walk on New York City’s Upper West Side produced by Megan Hattie Stahl. This immersive, musical documentary explores and extends the life and work of composer Beatrice Witkin (1916-1990). Across four stationary chapters and three walking interludes, participants follow a one-mile route from Riverside Park to Straus Park by way of Witkin’s longtime residence on West End Avenue. Through guided narration, archival music, interviews and recordings of contemporary musicians sight-reading a 1985 string quartet piece by Witkin, Serious Music invites listeners to consider where music begins and ends.

Introduction Henryk Jankowski’s historical-etymological dictionary of pre-Russian habitation names in Crimea1 contains toponyms of approximately 1,300 unique habitations that existed in this region prior to Russian annexation in 1783. The Historical Gazetteer of Crimea (HGC) is an open-access georeferenced gazetteer of historical places derived from Jankowski’s work. The HGC includes 135 habitations, 43 districts, 6 provinces, and 17 rivers shown on Jankowski’s map accompanying his book HGC materials are available through a Marquette University repository. Here we provide an overview of the HGC and the associated repository, starting with a review of the information sources used to create the gazetteer, …

This dissertation examines the design and manufacture of the mass-produced automobile in North America from its inception at the start of the twentieth century through the height of production in the late 1950s. This network of producers constituted the single largest industry in North America. The success of this market required producing a product that was desirable to consumers in design, affordable to purchase, and could be built in high enough quantities to justify the realignment of the rest of North American society to serve this new method of transportation. As the birthplace of the Nazi movement, Munich has long struggled to reckon with its legacy from World War II and the Holocaust. While some museums in Munich document the rise of the Nazis, the war, and the Holocaust, unlike other European cities, Munich lacks a centralized Holocaust museum or memorial. Instead, across the city there are dozens of mini-monuments—plaques, sculptures, cobblestone markings—that reference different figures and events related to Munich's Nazi history. These sites comprise a decentralized, bricolage approach to memorialization, leaving individuals to happen upon these mini-memorials and make sense of them without much context.

De Arte Rhetorica Libri Tres (1562) written by Cyprian Soarez (1524-1593), priest and teacher of the Society of Jesus, was the standard rhetorical manual in the Ratio Studiorum and thus was used for over two centuries in Jesuit colleges throughout the world. Concerned that young students of Latin were not yet ready for the major rhetorical texts of antiquity, such as Cicero’s and Quintilian’s, Soarez wrote this manual as a digest of ancient rhetoric to the beginner. Current research suggests elements such as color grading, scenic backgrounds, and maintaining a proper online social media presence affect how Instagram users engage with content. Beginning and ending with my own body, I explore how grief, as an embodied companion, offers wisdom and power in moments of profound change. Currently on its 5th edition of the game, the ability to tell stories has been highlighted like never before. With an emphasis on storytelling and collaboration, there are bound to be moments that are difficult. These are called transgressive play experiences. In 1891, newspapers across America printed a story about witches in the Appalachian Mountains and the alleged powers they possessed to control their small farming community. The article was scathing in accusation and ultimately contributed to continued othering of the women profiled, increasing their visible vulnerabilities of class, gender, and societal status. Despite an implied familiarity with the region, the article was published with initials for its byline, an act that simultaneously identified the author to locals as historian Eva Grant while offering her anonymized national protection as a subject expert. การวิจัยครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษา 1) ลักษณะและสภาพการใช้เมทาเดทาเชิงบริหารที่ปรากฏอยู่ในระเบียนข้อมูลของคลังสถาบันในห้องสมุดมหาวิทยาลัย และ 2) ปัญหาในการใช้เมทาเดทาเชิงบริหารของบรรณารักษ์งานวิเคราะห์ทรัพยากรสารสนเทศ การวิจัยเป็นแบบเชิงปริมาณโดยใช้การสำรวจ (Survey Research) ประกอบด้วยการวิเคราะห์ระเบียนเมทาเดทาจำนวน 400 ระเบียนจากคลังสถาบัน 8 แห่ง และการเก็บข้อมูลด้วยแบบสอบถามและการสัมภาษณ์บรรณารักษ์งานวิเคราะห์ทรัพยากรสารสนเทศจำนวน 22 คนจาก 15 สถาบัน เพื่อประมวลลักษณะการใช้เมทาเดทา ปัญหา และทักษะที่เกี่ยวข้อง ผลการศึกษา พบว่า เมทาเดทาเชิงบริหารด้านการจัดการสิทธิ์ และด้านเทคนิค ปรากฏในสัดส่วนสูงสุดในทุกคลังสถาบัน โดยข้อมูลผู้สร้าง ผู้มีส่วนร่วม ลิขสิทธิ์ รูปแบบไฟล์ และขนาดไฟล์ถูกบันทึกอย่างสม่ำเสมอ ขณะที่เมทาเดทาด้านการสงวนรักษา เช่น ประวัติการจัดทำระเบียน แหล่งที่มา และข้อมูลระยะเวลาการเก็บรักษา แม้จะปรากฏในระดับปานกลาง แต่ยังมีความไม่สม่ำเสมอระหว่างสถาบันอย่างชัดเจน นอกจากนี้ รูปแบบการบันทึกเมทาเดทามักรวมอยู่ในเขตข้อมูลเมทาเดทาเชิงพรรณนาและเชิงโครงสร้าง มากกว่าการแยกเป็นหมวดเฉพาะ ซึ่งสะท้อนข้อจำกัดทั้งด้านระบบและแนวปฏิบัติของบุคลากร ผลการวิเคราะห์ปัญหา พบว่า บรรณารักษ์ประสบปัญหาในระดับปานกลาง โดยประเด็นสำคัญ ได้แก่ การขาดการส่งเสริมจากหน่วยงานสังกัด การขาดความตระหนักรู้ต่อบทบาทของเมทาเดทาเชิงบริหารต่อการอนุรักษ์ข้อมูลระยะยาว และข้อจำกัดด้านระบบและทรัพยากร แม้บรรณารักษ์จะมีทักษะการอธิบายข้อมูลในระดับปานกลางค่อนไปทางสูง แต่ยังขาดมาตรฐานกลางร่วมกันของสถาบัน ข้อเสนอแนะสำคัญจากการศึกษาครั้งนี้ คือ การจัดทำมาตรฐานกลางด้านเมทาเดทาเชิงบริหารสำหรับคลังสถาบันไทย การยกระดับบทบาทเชิงนโยบายของผู้บริหาร การพัฒนาศักยภาพบรรณารักษ์ด้านการอนุรักษ์ดิจิทัล และการปรับปรุงระบบคลังสถาบันให้รองรับเมทาเดทาเชิงบริหารเชิงลึก เพื่อเสริมคุณภาพการจัดการทรัพยากรสารสนเทศระยะยาวอย่างยั่งยืน

This thesis examines the labor of platformed sex workers, positioning their experiences as a site for understanding the entanglement of multiple intersecting economies. Through qualitative interviews, it explores how sex workers navigate platform infrastructures, manage audience engagement, and contend with visibility as both an economic necessity and a site of risk. Drawing on theories of emotional labor, visibility labor, and platform governance, the project highlights how sex work on digital platforms is shaped by overlapping systems of economic extraction, technological constraint, and cultural regulation. This thesis examines how AI-generated music disrupts traditional meaning-making processes in musical expression. Through semiotic analysis (Saussure, Peirce) and cultural theory (Hall), I demonstrate how AI produces technically proficient but culturally hollow compositions, what I term "floating signifiers." Case studies reveal AI's inability to replicate the lived experiences that give music its depth, despite accurate stylistic reproductions. The work identifies three fundamental losses: contextual grounding, authentic hybridity, and historical consciousness. I propose ethical frameworks for human-AI collaboration that preserve music's essential humanity while leveraging algorithmic capabilities.
