The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation of New York City has granted $425,000 to the National Historical Publications and Records Commission in support of historical editing projects of five Founding Fathers: John Adams (and his family), Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and George Washington. The grant is intended to give the editors and sponsoring institutions a three-year period in which to develop other bases of financial support, as funds from federal grant-making agencies, such as the NHPRC are not expected to keep pace with rising editorial and production costs. Freeman III, took office after a distinguished operational and administrative career in the Navy, including a recent "college presidency" as commandant of the Defense Systems Management College at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. He has assembled the facts of life concerning NARS with the aid of detailed memoranda from the acting archivist, who has unobtrusively injected between the lines some much-needed advice. The Laurens Papers will publish its last traditional, hot type volume about fifteen months from now. With the publication of volume 9 in February 1981, the project will have completed an almost comprehensive edition of Lauren's papers prior to the Revolution. Yet these nine volumes contain only one-third of the Laurens papers. Another eight thousand· documents remain to be published. The initial publication plan developed in the 1960s called for a series of highly selected volumes to cover the Revolution and later periods. However, the importance of those materials led to a revised publication plan calling for six . printed …

Without trying to explain away an error that gross, we can only say that it is the kind of error that occurred only once, and occurred in spite of our editorial method rather than because of it. Most of the other outright errors were less egregious: misspelled names; failure to annotate at it appeared in the original, though we doubt that history was changed by the omission of that particular punctuation. We would still continue to correct obvious typographical errors in typewritten or printed documents. Maybe a type does reveal something deeply hidden, but is it deeply hidden in the …

The system which I described in the opening part of my paper at Princeton was one in which the central computer is used primarily for the storage and manipulation of files. We now have a National Endowment for the Humanities grant that supports the development of a new series of programs which will allow us to automatically encode our computer files for typesetting. We have done further testing of this concept, and a report on those tests appears below.

The tenth annual Institute for Historical Editing will take place 19-31July 1981, in Madison, Wisconsin. Jointly sponsored by the National Historical Publications and Records Commission, the University of Wisconsin- Madison, and the State Historical Society of Wisconsin, the institute provides theoretical and practical instruction in documentary editing. Applicants should hold a master's degree in history or American civilization. A limited number of full and partial study grants are available. The National Historical Publications and Records Commission also announces the 1980-1981 competition for fellowships in historical editing.

Any mention of computers among humanists is likely to arouse strong passions, but they are no longer simply the older, more absolute passions of disdain on the one hand for any diabolical plot to train a machine to do human-or, in cases of concordancing and indexing, vaguely inhuman-work, or on the other a wholehearted acceptance of electric salvation from drudgery. This dialogue is a feature of the Newsletter intended to promote that exchange of ideas for which the Association of Documentary Editing exists. Mr. Shaw was asked to focus his comments both on things done well and on things that might have been done differently-the latter request being an invitation to describe those alternatives to which an editor may, rightly, have said No. The review, with Mr. Shaw's name deleted, was sent to Mr. Taylor, who was asked to comment on the observations. In this fourth number of volume two of the Newsletter, we take our leave by apologizing for a typographical error in the ballot distributed with the September Newsletter. Although the slate of nominees was rendered correctly in the text, a vintage Tredegar Company typewriter (bought no doubt at a Confederate army surplus store) misspelled Michael Richman's name and prepared a ballot that read Michael Richmond. We apologize for that.

The present level of reviewing for our editions is, to my mind, lower than that of the editing itself. Leave aside the occasional critics, high priests of ipsissima verba, who bemoan our textual impurities; look at the average, run-of-the-mill review. It normally contains a paragraph of mild praise for the editing, a paragraph on what the editee, if there is such a word, was doing in the period covered (this can often be written from the jacket blurb), and a paragraph that points out a few errors or, for lack of them, challenges a few specific editorial comments. I also want to emphasize that the Association for Documentary Editing is interested in having among its membership persons doing documentary editing in all fields, including persons who work in texts of ancient history, Arabic texts, medieval manuscripts, literary texts, and so on down to the documents of our own time.

A new and comprehensive edition of the letters of Henry Adams will be published in six volumes by Harvard University Press, in cooperation with the Massachusetts Historical Society. The first three volumes (letters 1858-1891) will go to press this spring, with publication date not yet set.
