Two items in the September 1982 Newsletter deal with matters I should like to comment on: Philip F. Gura's review of the Thoreau Journal, Vol. I, in which he compares the editorial methods of that edition with those of the Emerson Journals and Miscellaneous Notebooks UMN); and Fredson Bowers' letter to the Editor, commenting on differences between the systems used to record manuscript alterations (or to present a genetic text) in the Emerson JMN and in Professor Bowers' editions of William James and others.

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
Such was the title of a recent PBS program on the current information revolution made possible by electronics. Some of the opportunities which this technology offers to historical editors were explored at a conference in Philadelphia on 4-5 May 1981 entitled "Modern Technology and Historical Editing: National Historical Publications and Records Commission Word Processing Conference." The program focused on the use of word processors and computers by historical editors to expedite the publication of multi-volume printed editions.

In his presidential address at the ADE meeting in Princeton in November 1979, Arthur Link suggested that the profession's most obvious need was for "an authoritative manual on documentary editing." As a first step, Lester Cappon, the incoming president, suggested the formation of a committee whose first objective would be to determine the practicability of ADE producing a manual, and whose next objective (assuming the first was decided in the affirmative) would be to prepare a set of preliminary guidelines to be discussed at the annual meeting in Williamsburg in October 1980. All those engaged in the editing of literary and historical documents are deeply in debt to Dr. Tanselle for his thorough analysis of the editorial standards that have been set for the dozens of projects now going forward. Somewhat to the embarrassment of the profession, he has seized upon individual statements of editorial practice that have internal inconsistencies and that are in conflict with the editor's actual practice. It is in these two problem areas, lack of material and ethnocentric bias, that the historical editor can best offer help to the ethnohistorian. The importance of any single early colonial document containing description of preliterate peoples in North America is almost incalculable. In some few instances our knowledge of the very existence of individual tribes rests upon such a single document. 5 For this reason the historical editor should consider the needs of ethnohistory when he is choosing documents to edit for publication. You will be relieved to know that the sheaf of pages I hold in my hand does not constitute the paper I intend to inflict upon you this morning. It is instead a Xerox copy of Tom Tanselle's article "The Editing of Historical Documents" as it appeared in the 1978 volume of Studies in Bibliography. The Revolution Remembered makes a major contribution to scholarship of the Revolutionary War by bringing together in one volume a sampling of the rich resources of the common soldier's memory of that war as found in the Revolutionary War Pension and Land Warrant Records in Record Group 15 of the National Archives. Any student of the revolution who has used these records is aware of their virtually untapped potential for interpreting the way in which the war affected the common soldier both during the military campaigns themselves and in the decades after the men returned to their communities and families. …

I am interested that the Association for Documentary Editing would have a panel on the solo editor, because since reading Don Higginbotham's piece in the March issue of the ADE Newsletter the idea of the solo editor as a particular species of the genus of historical editor has intrigued me. As the single, sole, solo editor of the Papers of David Hartley, and as the associate editor of The Papers . of Philip Mazzei, I am presently both a solo editor and a team editor. Documentary editing has achieved unprecedented importance in American historical scholarship since the publication in 1950 of the first volume of Julian P. Boyd's edition of The Papers of Thomas Jefferson. Thanks to the support of state and federal government, foundations, and universities and to the labors of a generation of editors, scores of letterpress and microfilm editions have been completed or are in progress. These editions are noteworthy for their comprehensiveness and high standards of scholarship as well as for their cost. The Association for Documentary Editing recently received $500 to establish the Julian P. Boyd Award . This is intended to serve as a memorial to Boyd that will reflect both the breadth of his interests and his concern for excellence. The award will be given every three years to honor a distinguished contribution to knowledge of American history and culture. The donor, who prefers to be anonymous, intends to make further contributions to the award fund but not necessarily to support it single-handedly.

The nature of the editor's task frequently forces her to acquire greater knowledge of book production than the normal author, who gladly relinquishes technical worries to the publisher's staff. Necessity is frequently the chief motivating factor and osmosis the method in the editor's acquisition of this esoteric knowledge. Not surprisingly, given the financial resources involved, editors in the commercial sector have been quicker to adopt the latest technology to their tasks than have editors in the low-budget, subsidized, money-losing academic sector. Mazzei Honored By Italy And U.S.

The year 1980 marks the two-hundred-fiftieth anniversary of the birth of Philip Mazzei (1730-1816), the forgotten patriot who emigrated to Virginia in 1773 and joined Jefferson, Henry, and other colonial patriots in the growing independence movement. A United States Airmail Stamp commemorating the anniversary will be issued on 13 October, in Washington, D.C. The stamp has the same design as an Italian stamp to be issued at Poggio a Caiano, Italy, Mazzei's birthplace.

For this feature, which is designed to promote that exchange of ideas for which the Association for Documentary Editing exists, the reviewer was instructed to focus his comments on two aspects of the work under examination--one thing done well and one thing that might have been done differently. Admittedly, when the perfect editor produces the perfect edition the flaw in this contrived format shall stand exposed. I'd like to offer two preliminary comments about the general topic of this session, the "perfect" text, and another about the aspect of that topic which I've been asked to discuss. On the general topic, our presentations may - indeed should - overlap; no aspect of textual scholarship, theoretical or practical, can be sensibly isolated from the others. And second, the placement of "perfect" in quotation marks in the title of the session is an acknowledgment of the virtual impossibility of the task: as editors we are frustrated by a multitude of conditions - I'll be describing a few of …

Documentary Reviewing Reviewed: A Survey Of The Book Review Policies Of Selected Historical Journals, Gregg L. Lint
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
Book reviews in many ways are more important for the documentary publication than the monograph. In the latter case the book is published, reviewed, and in a sense forgotten. Multiple volume documentary editions, published over a long period, should receive and, indeed, require constant review, each new volume being compared with the preceding ones. The importance of reviews is no less for smaller selective editions of only a few volumes or on microforms. For the documentary edition, much more a reference book than the monograph, reviews should inform potential users of its utility and help to maintain quality.
