Designing For Truth In Counterfactual Games, Mark Sample
Designing For Truth In Counterfactual Games, Mark Sample
Electronic Literature Organization Conference 2020
This paper brings together two distinct and seemingly irreconcilable threads: first, the place of interactive narratives and games within the broader context of documentary media; and second, the value of counterfactual narrative as a documentary form. I will weave these two threads using my own counterfactual documentary game as the guide. Currently under development in Twine, the game is rooted in archival research about the past yet is about a version of the past that didn’t happen. The game asks the following counterfactual question: what if gene editing technology like CRISPR had been invented in the 1920s and 1930s, the …

A Drawing a Day Keeps the Pandemic Away
The project is called A Drawing a Day Keeps the Pandemic Away. We created it on March 17th, which was the day when we realized that we weren’t going to be able to go back into the museum and continue installing the exhibitions we had been planning to open on March 27th. People were asking us what we, as an art museum, were going to do to reach out to the community during the pandemic shutdown and honestly we were wondering that ourselves, so we had an online brainstorming session and came up with the idea of posting a daily …

Fair World 64: A Text-Based Game Of The 1964–1965 World's Fair, Christofer R. Gass
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The project is a text-based game of a typical day during the first season of the 1964 World’s Fair in what is now Flushing Meadows-Corona Park. The 1964-1965 World’s Fair, that Robert Moses presided over as president, was one of the largest and most expensive fairs ever created, but only days after the last fairgoer left through the turnstile most of the many pavilions that brought education, entertainment, and joy to so many people were destroyed to leave a vast open space that is relatively empty to this day. Although most of the pavilions were either relocated or demolished, there …

Consumer Response To Green Brands Vs. Traditional Brands On Digital Platforms: An Analysis Through A Series Of Case Studies, Madison Busick
Consumer Response To Green Brands Vs. Traditional Brands On Digital Platforms: An Analysis Through A Series Of Case Studies, Madison Busick
Honors Scholar Theses
In the age of environmental crisis, consumers are increasingly aware of the environmental impact of their decisions. Accordingly, many companies seek to provide more eco-friendly and sustainable products while building their brand around these values. Consumers also are increasingly using and engaging on social media and other digital platforms. But just how well do these "green" brands do in the digital space? This study aims to compare differences between brands that embody environmentalist values and traditional brands with a variety of case studies across several consumer goods segments including clothing, cosmetics, and technology. The data is collected from a variety …

This illustrated guide captures the history of the section of Worcester where the College of the Holy Cross is located. Historical sources and imaginative interpretations based on historical research are combined to create a unique "then and now" approach and experience of "double vision" to tell the story of College Hill.
This guide was a project of Montserrat Seminar 111N, taught by Prof. Sarah Luria in Spring 2020.

COVID-19 Graphic Design: Data Visualization and Information Design
Inspired by the Russian Constructivism movement over 100 years ago, this piece pays homage to the parallels that exist in 2020 and that we are still grappling with in our society. The Russian Revolution of the 1920s brought a philosophy and design movement that was aimed to reflect modern industrial society and urban spaces that favored art, design, and architecture for practical and social purposes. The movement’s design was based on construction from products of society or what was in the studio, home, or office. The modern-day feeling of unrest and contempt for not having enough resources to survive living …

As designers, students were given the responsibility to deliver information about the current culture while also acting as a participant to history — a primary” source. The object was to document history while also allowing for moments of positivity in the midst of such anxiety and uncertainty.

In this project, students were asked to produce 10-by-16-inch digital posters responding to the challenge and stress of the COVID-19 pandemic. After reading Professor Misty Thomas-Trout’s handwritten letter, the students used the design tools Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign to highlight positive messages coming from the present circumstances.
“You have one meta-objective with this project: Focus on the positive messages only. If negativity is weaved in or comes across your thoughts, jot this down somewhere. Be aware of that thought, but continue to block it out with positivity.”
