Previous studies on humor in therapy suggest that some types of humor are more beneficial than others. This author found humor to be an essential part of coping with the loss of her mother and wondered why humor is broken down into good and bad parts, when humor can be subjective and dependent on culture and context. This chapbook manuscript focuses on themes of sexual identity and yearning. The sequence of poems follows a speaker who indulges in the delusion of being in a romantic relationship with someone they were once friends with. In the manuscript, the speaker must sort through his emotions and accept his truth to have closure from this friendship. The sequence encapsulates a variety of forms. One recurring form throughout the sequence is the alignment of text on the page to signify conversations between the speaker and his imagined lover. This capstone presentation is the culmination of a creative project that aimed to promote poetry through Fine Print, UMW’s poetry club on campus. The goal was to make poetry accessible for all on campus and build a specific community that celebrates it. Beyond spreading love of poetry, the purpose of this capstone was to leave Fine Print in a good place by building the club’s long-term engagement and participation, which grew exponentially throughout the semester. Although still a tight-knit community of poets, Fine Print encourages casual attendance to both events and meetings by anybody who finds it intriguing. Through regular …

Life Of Poetry: Practicing The Art Of Incarnation, Madison Wilcox

This creative research project explores three questions. First, what does it mean to live a life of poetry, to be a poet? Second, what is the life cycle of a poem? How does a poem begin, grow, and come to an end? And finally, could Christ be a poet? By writing a collection of poems as the core of my project, I explored the poet’s life, followed several poems through their life cycle, and reflected on the intersection between Christ’s life and ours. Grief Is Isolating. The Elegy Is Not: An Exploration Of Loss And Grief In Poems, Jennifer Terry

Grief is a messy, complicated process, one that can be all-consuming and isolating after a loss. Victoria Chang’s poetry in Obit and Ada Limón’s Bright Dead Things both explore loss and grief by using forms and free verse to characterize the stakes that come with a loved one’s decline and the aftermath of death. Michelle Zauner’s memoir, Crying in H Mart does similar work through the use of poetic elements in the memoir form. In my collection, Elegies of Home, I encounter the same struggles like the loss of identity, loss of a parent, and use the elegy as …

To be Indigenous is to be la luz del mundo, to stand in your light and spread your sunrays, no matter winds or clouds of colonization that strive to dim you. This qualitative study explored ways Indigenous Latine families negotiate a sense of place within onto-epistemological realities and their home culture of learning and Western education. This research is desire-based (Eve Tuck, 2009), creating our own project of modernity, grounded in one Indigenous family’s experience within their Andean community.
