Anyone who’s spent time in the Western United States is now familiar with living in and alongside wildfire smoke. The smell permeates everything. When I was on a fire crew in Washington state, we slept outside in the smoke. We’d wake to find our sleeping bags sprinkled in white. Each morning brought a ritual of coughing, itching, dryness and persistent low-grade headaches. Last summer, shortly after I moved to haze-shrouded Sacramento, ash floated through the orange trees and settled on the decaying Victorians lining my street. In “Structure: Lifeblood of the Lyric Essay,” Lesh Karan writes: “I had discovered a prose genre where the writer leans on form… to eloquently hold the inexpressible aboutness, to let meaning dance in the spaces between its juxtaposed parts.” The lyric essay engages us in a search for an elusive truth, and attempts to give definition to things that, while hanging heavy above us, may have been unclear until put to paper. The connective tissue in this collection of poetry entitled, "Conversations with Myself" is in the exploration of internal thoughts that make up insecurities, regrets, fantasies, desires, and fear as they relate to self, others, and society. Internal thoughts live in a tension of the past, present, or possibility that form the anxieties and/or serenity we carry with us. It is a question of identity and experiences and how the mind twists and turns these moments to shape an individualâ??s perception.

This article explores chronic poetics, through my personal lens I take readers on a walk- through of poetry and the discussions surrounding chronic illnesses. I examine the current state of chronic illness and the nuances to its discussion. I analyze chronic illness in the context of disability studies, and touch on the tensions of categorizing chronic illness as a disability. As well as how to best navigate reading chronic poetics, as poets engage in new territories as they form a new language to describe their circumstances. The fantastic (le fantastique) is a literary genre that originated from France, which has a specific characteristic of an ambiguous event that cannot be found in other literary works from other countries that introduce similar genres. This study discusses the translation strategies used to translate these fantastic events in Venus dari Kota Ille, the Indonesian translation version of the fantastic story of La Vénus d'Ille by Mérimée (1837).
