Cultural hierarchy, or the perception that different forms of art relate to each other in terms of higher or lower sophistication, has commanded the way we view art for centuries. Matthew Salesses (2021) asks ‘How can we rethink craft, and the teaching of it, to better reach writers with diverse backgrounds? How can we invite diverse storytelling traditions into literary spaces?’ This paper applies these questions to students in the Arab Gulf, by presenting and analysing the results of a research project investigating the barriers (culturally, locally, and in terms of colonial conceptions of craft) that impede student creative writers in Qatar. This essay suggests new craft techniques in fiction are emerging, which act as a palimptext, a writing, erasure, and overwriting of subtext, establishing new relationships between writer and reader. Traditional uses of subtext rely on an unspoken relationship between writers and readers wherein writers “hide” thematic meaning in subtextual layers of fiction and readers “dig” for these deeper meanings. However, this essay shows reading practices have changed from deep reading to skimming and information-seeking practices. The De-Indigenisation Of The English Language: On Linguistic Idiosyncrasy, Fayssal Bensalah

This paper introduces and explains a fresh adaptation of linguistic hybridity. This creative strategy is common among postcolonial, transnational and transcultural writers, who would import linguistic features from their first languages to hybridise their prose and paint it with a distinctive identity. I aim, however, to demonstrate that my English text can be hybridised without looking outside the English language, but rather by looking within it. The English language, as I argue, is already a hybrid language, populated by thousands of words borrowed from various languages, including Arabic. Salzburg, Austria is a city full of history. During the Baroque era from about the mid sixteenth century to the end of the eighteenth century, the Prince-Archbishops of Salzburg designed and modeled the city with Rome, Italy in mind. Their loyalty to the Holy Roman Empire and with the Reformation in full swing, these Italian influences helped to build a pro-Roman Catholic style throughout the city. The Prince-Archbishops and their architects demonstrated Salzburg’s loyalty to Rome through the structures of Schloss Mirabell, Schloss Hellbrunn, and the Franziskannerkirche. I chose to study F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby alongside Aya Morton's recent graphic novel adaptation. As scholars have noted the influence that modernist art had on Fitzgerald's writing style, I explored the influence that — impressionists and post-impressionist artists — had on Morton's renditions.

My manuscript, Flight, is a novel concerned with intersections, and examines how the borders between humans, both artificial and circumstantial, can be interpreted as ways of connecting with one another. It is a hybrid novel written in the form of a braided essay that integrates both nonfiction excerpts that span from grief philosophy to music history to biology, and lyrical narrative. It addresses grief from multiple angles, examining the holes that other grief literature has not addressed. My story is one about the dangers of mankind in its relentless pursuit of knowledge and asks questions regarding how much is one willing to sacrifice all for the sake of being superior to those around him, and rising above what society expected one to stay as or become. This short story of my own creation was made through my own effort and tempered by the criticism of those around me, truly befitting of a story that examines the nature of knowledge and what we are willing to do in order to grasp it.
