This autoethnographic piece is rooted in the belief that “self” is not bound by the physical body. The writing flows from narrative to poetry and then delves into reflexive and theoretical thinking about life. In essence, the narrative highlights the importance I place on Divine guidance in all aspects of my life and illustrates a moment of clarity inspired by the peaceful presence of a heron. I reach into the earth, pull out mud-encrusted objects, and recombine them to define new meanings. With every object transposed, the past breaks down; new potentials form. “New Commandments” recombines historical symbolism through an intuitive building, destroying, and merging to reimagine or re-establish meaning.

The work critiques rites of passage, masculinity, and stereotypes by deconstructing how histories, ideologies, and preconceptions form.

Various mediums explore culture, class, collective memory, identity, and erasure. This body of work examines the involvement of association as it relates to our cultural interpretations of natural phenomena. Flowers and animals, both real and imagined, have been used as symbols for human morality since the beginning of human history. Two sources with which I drew inspiration from are medieval bestiaries and the Victorian practice of flower language. By combining elements from these references, I aim to pair this idea about the human need for classification with my own considerations about my identity. As a modern reworking of the classic tale of “Robin Hood,” my creative thesis is a post-modern realist fiction novel that aims to provide the classic tale with a feminocentric point of view in a modernized setting. This is a fictionalized work that looks at Cochise’s life, through a series of imagined scenarios. My intention in writing this was to provide an intimate venue by which he not only comes alive as an extraordinary warrior and sage archetype, but as a human being who struggled with doubt, loss, and fear. Leadership, honesty, and honor are important themes that Cochise’s life exemplified. Though soft spoken, he imparted volumes on leadership to his people and enemies through his spiritual, emotional, and physical presence.
