"As above, so below, as within, so without, as the universe, so the soul." Hermes Trismegistus
I am but a humbly painted vessel of the Almighty Artist, here to share in this uniquely significant piece of the great mural. They say that art imitates life and that through the creation of art we become one with the divine painter of the universe. That is why the calling of the artist is the most noble of pursuits, for the artist is the truest reflection of the source of things. Yet art is not finite and cannot be nailed down. Like the …
Creative Expressive Writing And Perceived Self-Efficacy In The Writing Center—A Tutor’S Narrative, Allison King
Creative Expressive Writing And Perceived Self-Efficacy In The Writing Center—A Tutor’S Narrative, Allison King
McNair Scholars Research Journal
You know the story…the one about a curious little girl, captivated by a little white rabbit? Like young Alice, my curiosity compelled me to follow my own white rabbit down an unknown path, at least to me. It found me when I attained an internship in our university writing center the fall of 2012. And down the rabbit-hole, I fell. My adventures in writing center wonderland grew into an infatuation with writing—the tutoring of, the process of, the pedagogies of, the praxis of. Many discourses of writing pull at me, begging to be consumed and adapted to suit the situation. …

Mother's Bed: Gender Representation In Children's Literature, Karin Hanni
Mother's Bed: Gender Representation In Children's Literature, Karin Hanni
Senior Theses
This children's book and accompanying research paper both address gender inequity in children's literature. There is a significant imbalance of gender representation in children's literature, with the number of central male characters almost doubling that of central female characters. Additionally, the roles of males and females still tend to be stereotypical: boys are action-oriented and heroic, while girls are nurturing and passive. Further, it is believed that boys will only enjoy books about boys, while girls will enjoy books about both boys and girls. This imbalance in children's literature hurts both genders. Children not only learn to read from books, …
Reinventing Language, Vowel By Colorful Vowel, Clark Lunberry
Reinventing Language, Vowel By Colorful Vowel, Clark Lunberry
English Faculty Research and Scholarship
A Fable of a Fable, or “The Story of One of My Follies”: After he’d invented “the color of vowels,” regulated the “form and movement of each consonant,” the young poet then, applying his “instinctive rhythms” to the task, proudly proclaimed that he had alchemically created “a poetic language accessible, some day, to all the senses.” Notably, with his project in place, this poet, Arthur Rimbaud, tells us that he was then quick to “reserve translation rights.” This legal move on the poet’s part was perhaps thought initially necessary because, as he notes in 1873, the described synesthetic impact of …

Scenes From The Gaijin Life, Ian M. Rogers
Scenes From The Gaijin Life, Ian M. Rogers
Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Scenes from the Gaijin Life contains eight interconnected stories about foreigners (gaijin in Japanese) living and working as English teachers in urban Japan. It recounts their daily lives and initial struggles, their jobs and their nights out, their formal conversations and their personal ones. The first five stories use a detached, neutral narration that forces readers to interpret sensory details on their own, while the latter three use an omniscient narration that helps readers understand the characters’ interactions with Japan. Though the eight scenes are all different, they’re connected by estrangement, longing, uncertainty, and the characters’ ever-present dissatisfaction with …

In Restless Character: A Short Story And Writing Analysis, Emily Buechner
Senior Honors Theses
Creativity is the process of making something new. For those who desire to use their creativity, this process is discouraging because so many things have already been created. Originality becomes a battle to find a subject that remains untouched. However, Salman Rushdie, author of the1981 Booker Prize-winning novel Midnight's Children, gives a theory for "how newness enters the world" as written in his 1992 essay "Imaginary Homelands." In this essay, he explores the negative and positive consequences resulting from the co-mingling of cultures, and he comes to the conclusion that the merging of two or more things unalike will …
Young Adult Dystopian Literature As Social Change Evolution, Rachel L. Scherzer
Young Adult Dystopian Literature As Social Change Evolution, Rachel L. Scherzer
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Projects
In recent years, the mass popularity of young adult dystopian novels has led literary scholars to question the rise in popularity and the impact of such novels. This project explores the social justice potential of dystopian fiction, especially young adult dystopias, to act as a model for the way that rebellion can be an important and useful tool in standing up against injustice in society.
Using Suzanne Collin’s The Hunger Games, this project argues that young adult dystopian fiction can model for young people a personal evolution in understanding social change and the revolutionary possibility of actively standing up …

Cave Painting, Natasha Lynn Arnold
English Theses & Dissertations
This collection of short fiction—four short stories and five works of flash fiction seeks to explore the chasm between youth and adulthood, the past and the future. Characters at critical stages in their youth ask something different about who they are and what they want. How does one cope with a risky friendship? Can one brother protect and provide for another while coping with the trauma of abuse himself? How can a child cure her mother's depression? Characters may be left ambivalent about the future, but the events of their respective stories will have given them new perspectives on the …
“Amidst The Chime Of The Razor Wire”: Narrating Poetic Justice In Guantanamo Bay, Kristina H. Reardon
“Amidst The Chime Of The Razor Wire”: Narrating Poetic Justice In Guantanamo Bay, Kristina H. Reardon
The Quiet Corner Interdisciplinary Journal
The quest of poetic justice carries Marc Falkoff’s 2007 anthology Poems from Guantanamo: The Detainees Speak into the court of public (literary) opinion. While the Pentagon asserts that poetry poses special security risks, and related translation issues may obscure the artistry or message of some of the 17 poets’ verse, Falkoff’s volume nevertheless gives prisoners’ voices a forum in which they might be heard. At the nexus of legal and literary scholarship, poetic voice and its expression become a site of deconstructing identity. The Guantanamo poets invite readers to explore the ways that aesthetics form perceptions of their identity as …

Note: The three following pieces were written as a class assignment and all appear under the same title. The possibilities of the subject were so numerous that there is very little over-lapping in the papers and it seemed proper to print all three as representing a more exhaustive treatment of the subject. - The Editor.
