The Appetizer And Other Poems, Sam Blomberg Jan 2016

The Appetizer And Other Poems, Sam Blomberg

CMC Senior Theses

Thrust into a world of poetry, I’ve grown to embrace the poetic lens. Each topos, each trope, each rhyme, each cliché, each morning morning’s minion, each reduction to a state of almost savage torpor, each nightingale, each ode to an obscure, inanimate object, and every single Stella of the skies holds special significance hidden to the naked eye. Not insamuch as something undiscoverable upon ponderance. Rather, a way to contemplate the physical. The Ah, Sunflower! reaction. That is not to say that poets have a supernatural eyesight to certain beautiful images. My eyes do not see any more dandelion puffs …

The International Community's Response To The Hypothetical Emergence Of Superheroes, Brittany Nicole Woods Jan 2016

The International Community's Response To The Hypothetical Emergence Of Superheroes, Brittany Nicole Woods

CMC Senior Theses

In a golden era for comic based media, this paper uses the hypothetical emergence of superheroes to analyze the assumptions and predictions of three international relations theories: realism, liberalism, and constructivism. Comics consistently reflect the real world, paralleling events and concepts discussed in foreign affairs dialogues. The thought experiment, and the comic genre itself, provides a vehicle for thinking broadly about the political and social ramifications of successful or failed problem solving, state interaction, and scientific advances.

When I was sixteen, my mother was killed one evening while running on the bayou behind our house in Houston. The man, who is now on Death Row in Texas, beat, raped, and then strangled her to death. Writer Mary Cappello says of Creative Nonfiction, to compose discursively requires that we turn in the direction of the discourses that have made us who we are rather than start from a place of what we think happened to us in the course of our lives. She goes on further to say, Creative nonfiction appreciates the power of prepositions. Instead of writing …

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The Man Who Took A Breath confronts the ongoing battle of good and evil and its connection to humanity's search for and defense of personal truth, mainly as it's revealed within and through human relationships. Blurring the line between right and wrong can force readers to take a breath before condemning someone else's brand of truth. People from all walks of life endure familial relationships, which estrange and comfort, tear down and build up. These stories are a series of snapshots into a variety of relationships and spiritual crusades meant to depict humanities' deep well for compassion, empathy, and love …

This Creative Non-Fiction essay discusses the lives of my Grandfather, who lived from 1912-2001; my Father, who lived from 1942-1996; and myself, born in 1969, and still in the midst of my life's journey. Along the way, we delve into the changing American culture, sometimes in detail, sometimes in passing. Our relationships with one another, as well as with others (especially our spouses and children), also figures prominently. La Gente Entre Nosotros / The People Between Us, Gerard Stephen Robledo Jan 2016

La Gente Entre Nosotros / The People Between Us, Gerard Stephen Robledo

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

This collection stems from the tradition of poetry of witness / anthro-poetry, and chronicles the lives of individuals within communities who are affected by racism, ignorance, and Americanization. The catalyst for this collection was the massive influx of immigrant children fleeing South and Central American, and Mexico to the United States in the summer of 2014. This event spurred a whirlwind of anger, confusion, and racism, which left children in the political crossfire. Thus, this collection is aptly titled La Gente Entre Nosotros / The People Between Us.

In this collection, I take the approach of the anthro-poet, to document …

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

“Every land / carves a people, marks them heavy like an / accent,” writes Gavin Lambert in his poem, “In Summer We Move Slowly,” and Lambert’s collection explores the connective tissue of that very relationship—the one between a land and its people. On the dirt roads and highways that take us along the continuum from geography to identity (part drunken road trip, part afternoon stroll, part shambling hike, part not-so reliable history tour) he takes us on a journey through a strange and familiar landscape where “Every place is sacred / or near a sacred place.”

All The World's A Page: Towards A Definition Of 'Writer' In An Age Of Opportunity, Sue Norton Dec 2015

All The World's A Page: Towards A Definition Of 'Writer' In An Age Of Opportunity, Sue Norton

Articles

This article considers the status of the writer at a time when publication is no longer elusive, given the immediacy of online dissemination. For those who identify as writers, it looks at the implications of blogging, social media, entrepreneurial self-publishing, and scholarly open access journals, including so-called ‘predatory’ ones. It argues for a distinction between day-to-day writing and composition, and seeks to establish a category for the writer that takes account of deliberation, craft, and readership. It juxtaposes the creative activity of Jack Kerouac, Virginia Woolf, Truman Capote, and Mother Goose against the linguist John McWhorter’s convincing dismissal of the …

This is a semi-fictional story told through a series of fake found documents. It describes my work and thoughts through metaphor. Machines have the potential to gain self-consciousness through accumulation of errors. Creativity can be confused with randomly generated variety. The acceptance of chaos and loss of control can provide a path to enlightenment.
