Today, the 2016 Literary Stunt Dogs are proud to bring you yet another engaging and entertaining issue filled with works created by students, faculty, staff, and other DSU members. In addition to the print copy, we are now offering our works online as well.

Interaction Between Human Experience, Landscape , And Coffee Production In The Blue Mountain Region Of Jamaica, Shohei Yoshida Apr 2016

Interaction Between Human Experience, Landscape , And Coffee Production In The Blue Mountain Region Of Jamaica, Shohei Yoshida

Masters Theses

In today's coffee industry, individual farmers’ identities are hardly visible from the products we buy. Each coffee farmer has different lifestyles and methods of coffee farming. Such information about farmers can make each cups of coffee potentially unique in consumers’ experience. However, there are barriers which make consumers blind from the identities of the farmers making their coffee. I will explain about the barriers, and introduce the way to make consumers associate individual farmers' identities with each cup of coffee they drink. This thesis mainly consists of two parts: a theoretical part and a poetry part. There is a small …

On Myrtle: A Novel, Laurie Ann Cedilnik Apr 2016

On Myrtle: A Novel, Laurie Ann Cedilnik

Dissertations

For nearly a century, readers have known the story of Myrtle Wilson, infamous literary mistress of F. Scott Fitzgerald's THE GREAT GATSBY. Fitzgerald's Tom Buchanan is married to a woman who is the picture of wealth and elegance, and yet he is drawn to this woman about whom readers know very little, and about whom we hear only in a retrospective vantage of the partial observer Nick Carraway. Mrs. Wilson puts on airs and takes blows, an her death is as graphic as any of literature's fallen women. And like Myrtle, Fitzgerald casts his fictionalized Flushing as symbolic of a …

The Unseen Hole, Jeremy Chase-Israel Apr 2016

The Unseen Hole, Jeremy Chase-Israel

Stonecoast MFA Theses and Capstones

Every story in this collection is an escape attempt. Some have better tools and plans than others, but they're all working towards a shared goal. When I sit down to write, I often picture the small crevices in my brain the ideas squeeze through before dropping down into the sewer of my imagination. If they manage to break free, then I clean them off, picking away bits of filth, until they're able to stand and grow on their own.

The characters filling my thesis are composite sketches of people I’ve known, animals I’ve met, and a sampling of my insecurities …

The Plastic Camp, Cierra Perry Apr 2016

The Plastic Camp, Cierra Perry

Masters Essays

I have created this story to capture how human suffering is often contained, perpetuated, and reinforced by a cycle of fear and emotions that result from the psychological neurosis of humans themselves due to inescapable insidious reflections. What I mean by insidious reflections is how one's own reflection in the mirror can manipulate one’s perception of oneself. In this story I explore the notion of individuals mirroring each other by inflicting torture onto others that they are unaware of because they are simply "mirroring" someone else's behavior. I am inspired by Stanley Milgram's documented film experiment An Obedience to Authority …

Paris Burn, Iliana Rocha Apr 2016

Paris Burn, Iliana Rocha

Dissertations

First and foremost, Paris Burn- interrogates language as a rebel heteroglot in its relation to power and to identity, focusing on liminality and marginality. The speakers in these poems constantly (re)enact, generate, disassemble, and revise their lyric selves, either reaffirming or challenging dominant discourses and ideologies. Drag queens figure prominently throughout the manuscript because they are the physical embodiment of constructs that challenge an essential identity—race, ethnicity, sexuality, and gender. The title, an abbreviated form of Paris is Burning, an influential 1980s documentary profiling drag culture in New York City, invokes a physical body that figures in metaphorical relation to …

In The Blooming Red, Elaine White Apr 2016

In The Blooming Red, Elaine White

English Theses & Dissertations

My thesis is a hybrid text that incorporates both poems and nonfiction essays. It essentially functions as one very long, very unusual narrative. Though the works in the thesis incorporate multiple locations, both in the US and abroad, the manuscript begins and ends in central Indiana. The best way I can describe what happens in between to say it is an exploration of trauma, mental illness, and what healing sometimes looks like. Though much of what is contained here has been called “dark” and “visceral,” I don’t like to leave it at that. Instead, I see the potential for these …

Ulu Boyar, Caleb True Apr 2016

Ulu Boyar, Caleb True

English Theses & Dissertations

Set during the Russian Civil War (1918-1922), ULU BOYAR traces the uprising of the Drinsk Cossacks against the tyranny of the Kiev Bolsheviks, who have taken residence in the sacristy of the holy of holies, the Cathedral of Saint Sophia. An homage to Nikolai Gogol's paean of the ancestral Cossacks, the historical satire ULU BOYAR utilizes the steampunk furniture of the Russian Civil War to weave a hilarious and hyperbolic epic of Ukrainian patriotism and resistance for an era of renewed Ukrainian-Russian antagonism.

Explaining Poetry To The Open Heart, Matthew Wayne Larrimore Apr 2016

Explaining Poetry To The Open Heart, Matthew Wayne Larrimore

English Theses & Dissertations

“Explaining Poetry to the Open Heart” is a creative writing thesis of poetry. It makes use of lyric and narrative poems that utilize sound, imagery, and other creative devices in order to communicate the narrator’s relationships with place, others, and self to the reader. A shifting point of view alternately restricts and expands the reader’s perspective in order to direct attention toward the reader’s own perceptions of the narrator, the world, and ultimately herself.

The Night We Set The Dead Kid On Fire, Ephraim Scott Sommers Apr 2016

The Night We Set The Dead Kid On Fire, Ephraim Scott Sommers

Dissertations

The Night We Set the Dead Kid on Fire, a collection of poetry, is a book chocked-full of characters (both women and men) that don’t receive much attention in Contemporary American Poetry,—the dishwashers, the addicts, the truckers, the card players, the convicts, the boxers, the grave-diggers, the mechanics, the farmers, the blue-collar “others”—and many of these characters are either the victims or the perpetrators of violence. This book's speakers (both women and men) lie and cheat and drink and fist-fight in parking lots, campgrounds, and dive bars. They get cheap in casinos, broken apartments, hospitals, and hotel rooms. In this …
