Muzungu is a novel about a white woman who denies her whiteness by passing and even identifying as a black woman, even as she maintains a contentious relationship with her white mother. The plot is revealed through the point of view of the adult, “black” Rachel, but from the very beginning, much of what she gives the reader are memories from her white childhood, memories involving two key experiences in her youth, experiences that provide her with her first awareness of herself as a white girl. The following creative work is the beginnings of a novel, reduced to two chapters for this thesis. Chapter one traces the psychological, sexual, political, and artistic development of an alienated protagonist. His closeted bisexuality is at odds with heteronormativity, his awareness of encroaching fascism at odds with a progressive culture, his depression is at odds with material comfort, his perception at odds with an inability to express himself, and his social atomization contrasts with a desire to escape the horizon of his own sensations and understand others. The Torment Of Exile And The Aesthetics Of Nostalgia : Transnational Chinese Neo-Romanticism In Xu Xu’S Post-War Fiction, Frederik H. Green

Journal of Modern Literature in Chinese 現代中文文學學報

Physical exile certainly was a painful reality for Xu Xu. Restorative nostalgia might to some extent have informed his literary activity in those years. However, nostalgia in Xu Xu’s postwar fiction, I will argue in this paper, constitutes above all the expression of a quest for a purely aesthetic utopia that had already begun to take shape in his pre-war oeuvre and that came to full fruition in his post-war fiction. Life Sucks: Classifying Transgressive Fiction, Jena Christianson

This thesis explores the genre of transgressive fiction and locates my own creative work within this genre. Los Angeles Times writer Michael Silverblatt popularized the term transgressive fiction in 1993 and associates authors such as Dennis Cooper, Kathy Acker, Roland Barthes, Bret Easton Ellis, Michel Foucault, William Gass, Jean Genet, and William Burroughs with the genre; however, the definition of transgressive fiction remains elusive. Therefore, in my first chapter, I analyze three transgressive novels—Bret Easton Ellis’s American Psycho, Chuck Palahniuk’s Fight Club, and Tony Tullamuthe’s Private Citizens.
