Quiet as a Church Rat is about a naïve teenager who attempts to steal money from his grandma’s purse to buy a video game. This teenager wants to live dangerously like a “rat” but in the process of stealing money from his grandma, he finds out that the “rat” life isn’t for him.

Visualizing The Narrative: A Modernization And Extension Of Ernest Hemingway's "Hills Like White Elephants"., Koryn N. Naylor

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Projects

For this project, I completed a screenplay for a short film. For my preliminary research into screenplay writing and form, I studied key concepts in narrative cinema, including theories of visual and narrative content. I wanted to enhance my understanding of the relationship between the writing of film and the way it translates to the screen. In particular I studied the relation between the narrative (plot and story) and visual (cinematography and mise-en-scène) in film theory, and the dichotomy of classical Hollywood vs. Avant-garde cinema. Place-Based Pedagogy And The Creative Writing Classroom, Jennifer Case

Journal of Creative Writing Studies

Although compositionists have long appropriated and discussed place-based pedagogy’s ability to encourage environmental awareness and engage community issues, creative writing as a discipline has largely ignored place-based philosophies and environmental education. In fact, creative writing pedagogy often undermines place-based pedagogy by encouraging students to “write what they know” while simultaneously encouraging work with national rather than regional appeal. This article takes the first major step toward addressing this oversight by exploring the field’s assumptions about “place,” how these assumptions are influencing our classrooms, and how place-based composition and pedagogy could—and should—challenge and expand the ways we teach creative writing.

“Marie” And “An Unusual Recourse”: English Translations Of German Early Romantic Stories, Meghan Leadabrand

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

This project consists of English translations of two German early Romantic stories, “Marie” (1798) by Sophie Mereau and “Seltner Ausweg” (1823) by Luise Brachmann, as well as an introductory discussion of the authors, their significance in the Jena Circle of Romantic writers, and the translation process. The introduction incorporates research on both Mereau and Brachmann and German early Romanticism, as well as some research on translation theory. Overall, the project aims to make “Marie” and “Seltner Ausweg,” which have not previously been translated, available to an English-speaking audience and to highlight the work of two little known Romantic women writers. …

The Privilege Of Home: A 400 Year Family History Of Immigration And Inhabitation On Native Land, Kristine Mahler

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

This presentation culls together the extensive text-based, place-based, and experience-based research I completed on the history of immigration and inhabitation on native land from 1620 through 2018 through the specific lens of my ancestors: French settlers who lived in Kébec’s St. Lawrence Valley and immigrated to western Wisconsin around 1865, eventually settling in northern Minnesota. As I researched my ancestry alongside the history of white settlement and forced native resettlement in these regions, I recognized a pattern of repeated inhabitation—traced through baptismal, marriage, and death certificates—by my family onto recently-vacated native land.
