Nexus is a magazine that began as an insert in the Wright State Guardian student newspaper in 1965 and has since been published semi-regularly. It began only accepting creative writing, but has since expanded to include illustrations, photography and other non-written art forms. Today, it is published in a digital format and accepts submissions from around the country, though it maintains its commitment to the Wright State Community.

I, Stephen is a memoir of the author’s time at basic training for the United States Navy. The primary theme explored through this piece is death as a metaphor for change, with smaller themes of relationships, perception versus reality, freedom versus security, and courage. The journey begins with the author’s first experience with near-death as an infant, then moving into his time in basic training which depicts the struggles with daily routines, interactions with officers, and physical ailments, ultimately leading to the author’s departure and eventual attendance at Concordia University – Portland. The Telling Room is a nonprofit writing center in Portland that helps young writers ages 6 to 18 build confidence, strengthen literacy skills, and provide real opportunities for students to display their creativity for audiences. Every year they approach creative writing through a unique theme to help keep young writers engaged. Their anthology’s theme this year is COLORS. Colors can symbolize and illustrate various aspects of life including human emotion, energy levels, and cultural phenomena.
