Confluence: A Braided Essay seeks to examine three distinct topics: the trauma of my parents' divorce, the controversial decision over Bears Ears National Monument in southeastern Utah, and Aileen Wuornos, the first documented female serial killer in the United States. The braided essay's unique format allows the author to select three different topics and weave them together. As the author braids the strands through the essay, the implications of the strands arise and begin to vibrate together on the page. This presentation is on a comparative analysis of two prominent Japanese authors' works of literature. The presentation is about a comparative study of hyperbole in Men without women by Haruki Murakami and Fudotoku Kyoiku Koza by Yukio Mishima. Both authors have significant positions in the history of Japanese literature with readership overseas. The rhetoric of hyperbole seems to be significant for both Murakami and Mishima since there are many examples of hyperbole in their works. Television is accessible to millions from the comfort of their own homes and shapes the way we view the world. It has the power to bring people together, but often presents diversity with a strong emphasis on labels. Characters are defined by the one trait that, to the majority of viewers, is unrelatable. This maintains the separation of “us” and “them,” isolating those in the minority. Representation is essential for progress, but it’s more than just including diversity. Instead of dwelling on differences and indulging in stereotypes, characters should all treat each other equally.

In March 2017, I began planning the narratives of what would become my Thesis Exhibition. One year later marked my installation of the exhibit: For Wintonbury, located at the Fine Art Center Gallery at the University of Arkansas.

A merging of the visual arts and literary fiction, For Wintonbury offers a more immersive experience in storytelling. The painted scenes, drawings, three-dimensional compositions, and short stories each serve their own purposes in presenting partial glimpses into the longer narratives of Wintonbury.
