Macho Remixes: A Collection Of Writings, Daniel A. Hernandez
Macho Remixes: A Collection Of Writings, Daniel A. Hernandez
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Macho Remixes: A Collection of Writings is a thesis containing short stories, poetry, and a personal essay that discuss the matter of toxic masculinity through the representations of male and macho sexuality in the Latinx culture. It covers depictions of how Latinx men have been stereotyped in today’s society. The works included here are my own perspectives of what masculinity means to me as a young multicultural male navigating life. Throughout these texts, I—my speakers and narrators—grapple with understanding the conflicting and oppressive expectations drawn from my roots, particularly those based in Latinx culture. The purpose is considering the negative …
Conceptualizing The Unspeakable: A Conceptual Metaphor Theory Analysis Of Sexual Assault Trauma In Creative Nonfiction, Ariana Ciamaricone
Conceptualizing The Unspeakable: A Conceptual Metaphor Theory Analysis Of Sexual Assault Trauma In Creative Nonfiction, Ariana Ciamaricone
West Chester University Master’s Theses
This paper explores the use of conceptual metaphors (CMs) in two works of creative nonfiction, namely Laurie Halse Anderson’s (2019) Shout and Elissa Washuta’s (2014) My Body is a Book of Rules. Anderson’s (2019) poetic memoir centers on her experiences with sexual assault throughout her childhood and the process of writing her young adult novel Speak (1999). Washuta (2014) writes on her experiences with rape and mental illness via prose. Both memoirs detail their authors’ reckoning with the experience of sexual assault, and this paper investigates how trauma narratives attempt to “resolve what cannot be resolved, to generate meaning, …

Iv. Gifts Of Taste: Discussing Wine With Heraclitus And Friedrich Hölderlin, Charles S. Taylor
Wine Journey: Tasting Dwelling Learning at The Kitchen Table
It happened on a weekday evening. Dinner was Pasta e Fagioli and I would have chosen a wine from Tuscany. But, in my cellar a thought arose to explore, and a 19-year-old 1999 Paitin di Pasquero-Elia Barbaresco Sorì Paitin ended up on the table. A new pairing 1 plus a wine from a new-to-me producer I had waited 15 years for it to mature provided opportunities. Pasta e Fagioli should be a fine accompanist to the wonderful softening taste of a maturing Barbaresco from the good 1999 vintage. The pairing worked well enough to repeat. That was merely the prelude.
‘To Sing The Haiku The American Way Is A Beautiful Thing’: The Haiku Of Etheridge Knight, Thomas Lewis Morgan
‘To Sing The Haiku The American Way Is A Beautiful Thing’: The Haiku Of Etheridge Knight, Thomas Lewis Morgan
English Faculty Publications
This essay takes up Etheridge Knight’s haiku as a means to trace his “major metaphor” of prison as a form of postcolonial cross-cultural haiku poetics. Knight’s haiku often focus on those that are voiceless along with the systems that work to disenfranchise them, using their experiences and conditions to engage the unequal power dynamics silently perpetuating inequality. In mapping out the explicit and implicit walls that position the hierarchies present in Knight’s haiku, and connecting these to his published comments on the role and function of haiku within his own poetic imagination, we can better understand Knight’s interest in re-imagining …

Skin, Maria Dipaolo
West Chester University Master’s Theses
Skin is an autobiographical book of free verse poetry written from the point of view of a female narrator. The poems in this book artfully depict both the futile struggles and moments of euphoria and self-revelation of a young woman who grew up in a broken home. The narrator uses her passion to form meaningful and deep relationships with other people, her sexuality, and her fascination and curiosity of the world around her as not only a coping mechanism, but also a form of self-expression. Each individual poem serves as a snapshot of a single moment in the narrator’s life; …
Oh, Mr. Sandman, Connor Keane
Oh, Mr. Sandman, Connor Keane
West Chester University Master’s Theses
This thesis consists of the first fifty-four pages of a full-length novel. It is intended to function as the first act of a four-act story, and therefore its primary goal is to set up and facilitate conflict and character development in later acts. I have chosen four acts over the traditional three act structure in order to further develop the central mystery and allow for slower, more nuanced character development. This thesis aspires to act as the foundation upon which a multifaceted narrative, containing both a compelling story and a meaningful message, can be told.
The premise of the novel …

Masters Theses
Adapting fairy tales and folklore has been an ongoing endeavor by storytellers and artists since the very first story was repeated. The evidence can be seen in the many versions of fairy tales like those of the sleeping beauty, from Giambattista Basile’s “Sun, Moon, and Talia” to Walt Disney’s Maleficent. However, unlike their European counterparts, adaptations of American tales outside of children’s literature are not as ubiquitous. My writing rectifies this by adding to the resurging interest as seen in recent retellings like Matt Bell’s Appleseed: The Monstrous Birth (2019).
In an effort to reframe the American tall tale …
