Abstract:

Mule: Fifteen Autobiographical Tales contains stories which are true except when they are not. Were this to be marketed by a publishing firm, it would be cataloged (for legal and expedient purposes) as fiction, like Kurt Vonnegut's highly autobiographical Timequake. I, also like Vonnegut, would protest that designation in the book’s introduction. Vonnegut called Timequake a “stew,” and I rather like that classification for Mule, which, like its author, is Southern. Mule, then, must be a bubbling gumbo built of truths, either of the strict or the spiritual variety. As the book's author, I trust readers …

As Northern New Mexicans we share watersheds, mountain ranges, wild growing remedios, the sun's setting path, and strong querencia. Yet, there are innumerable differet and significant ways in which our hearts beat for this land, water, and sky. This is querencia in the Fall season, in relation to our river. It is exactly what I observe today and love about time and place in Northern NM. It may be similar to many Nortenos, but not easily replicated.

"Nothing Above, Everything Below" is a "species poem" dedicated to the two kinds of "zoomers" that frequented Rudolfo Anaya's casita in Jémez Springs in the summertime. He was deeply inspired by the Jémez mountains, its peoples and creatures. Hummingbirds are so fascinating to all, that they easily become commonplace. Clichés when writing about them are difficult to overcome. This is the story of the two zumbadores (Sp.) that migrate to breed in northern boreal forests. An artistic writing developed from the themes and concepts of an of art installation made by a visual artist of Mexican-American descent from New Mexico. The work references the relationship of Aztec mythology to the American Southwest, art theoretical discourse in object oriented ontology and aesthetics, and key ideas in astronomy. Additionally interwoven is an expanded sense for interpreting ancestry and history under the constructs of multicultural conceptions of time, specifically cultures with notable spiritual rituals of Sun worship and observation.
