Robert A. Keinlein’s science fiction novel Starship Troopers (1959), and its film adaption of the same title directed by Paul Verhoeven (1997), received mixed critical reactions. Both pieces came across as supporting fascistic ideals to most critics upon release, despite the two creators opposing political and moral beliefs. Using Louise Rosenblatt's reader response theory as a framework for analyzing both the novel and film adaptation, this paper postulates the film adaptation fails to deliver an accurate critique of the novel by placing the burden of moral knowledge on the audience. Tayeb Salih's Season of Migration to the North Disacounter-narrative written in 1969 at the early phase of African 'Decolonization'. This narrative re-writes Conrad's Heart of Darkness –and other ethnocentric representations of Europe's Other such as Shakespeare's Cali ban and Othello-from an Arab/African perspective. In his Culture and Imperialism, Said considers Salih's novel an example of the postcolonial native writers' reclamation of the fictive to poi of colonial culture "on the very same territory once ruled by a consciousness that assumed the subordination of a designated inferior. The Assembly for Expanded Perspectives on Learning (AEPL), an official assembly of the National Council of Teachers of English, is open to all those interested in extending the frontiers of teaching and learning beyond the traditional disciplines and methodologies. JAEPL is especially interested in helping those teachers who experiment with new strategies for learning to share their practices and confirm their validity through publication in professional journals.

The Journal of the Assembly for Expanded Perspectives on Learning

Artistic response is the process by which readers create concrete representations of their transactions with a text through artistic means, including visual arts (e.g. drawing, sculpture, and painting), drama, and music. Research has shown that artistic response helps students form meaningful relationships with texts, as it is a tool that encourages students to enter, explore, make connections, and enjoy stories and characters. In this article we describe an artistic response strategy that we developed and implemented.
