In 1864, three years after the death of his wife, Robert Browning engaged in a correspondence with Frances Julia Wedgwood, an intellectual spinster of thirty. Miss Wedgwood was a woman of distinguished ancestry, being a descendant also of Sir James Mackintosh, and a relation by marriage of Charles Darwin. Miss Redwood had long been an admirer of Browning's poetry. She herself had written several novels, so it was natural that sooner or later an occasion should arise when she and Robert Browning would meet.

Interest in the death theme has been pronounced all through the ages because the subject is of such vital importance to man. Poets and writers have expended their best literary efforts in treating death in its every aspect. The purpose of this thesis is to study in particular, a certain group of poets commonly spoken of as The Graveyard School. Their poetry on death will be treated in such a way as to show the hopelessness and pessimism of the various writers.

Philosophy tells us that many arguments and seeming differences of opinion may be avoided if the parties involved would simply define the terms of the question under discussion. It will, perhaps, be well then to follow this advice in the treatment of our subject which is Nature as it is found in eighteenth century English poetry. Just what terms then must be defined or made clear? According to Matthew Arnold an open mind is one of the chief essentials for true literary criticism. One is impressed by the truthfulness of this statement when he seeks to evaluate Negro poetry.

The term, Negro poetry, has several interpretations. In its most general sense, the one in which it is used in this paper, it means poetry written by Negroes on any subject. In a more restricted sense it refers to poetry that contains allusions, rhythms, sentiments and idioms more or less peculiar to the Negro. In its narrowest meaning it refers to poetry of racial protest and self-exhortation. …

This thesis is offered as a study of Alice Christina Meynell, her literary ideas in regard to prose, and her relation to the English essay. For the most part the illustrations have been selected from material which is available. Several of the quotations are contained in her unpublished works; some other quotations could not be attributed to any author, as they were spoken by Alice Meynell to her intimate friends. This paper was prepared after an examination of the available prose work of Mrs. Meynell and after reading several articles and books and chapters in other books on criticism.

Much has been written concerning Quintus Horatius Flaccus, a Roman poet and satirist born two thousand years ago, and Robert Herrick, and English lyrist of the seventeenth century. Notable literary histories of the two languages, criticisms of the writings of each of the two men and his contemporaries, short biographical studies of the two authors, discussions in literary and classical magazines, and many treatises on the Horatian influence have been written, but no individual parallel of these two authors has been issued.

Thls study, Some Aspects of the Intellectual Poise of George Robert Gising, had its inception in a course in The Novel, an Intepretation of Life, offered by Doctor Frederick A. Stuff in the summer session of the University of Nebraska in 1926. More narrowly, it began with that part of the course treating of the mode in literature known as realism.
