Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis consists of three short stories in very different genres but tied together by a intensely personal look at the lives of its protagonists culminating in epiphanies. One of these epiphanies is intended solely for the reader, but in two cases, the reader and character gains the insight. “The Tears of Angels” looks at the effect one person in a moment, even a stranger, can have on the protagonist’s life. “Climbing Heaven and Gazing on Earth” focuses on the haunting power of history and the need we as humans can feel to share a story, to make sense of …

Dissertations
This dissertation contains an essay with the above title, as well as two sections of poems. The first section of poems is entitled Maria Sibylla Merian, Artist and Naturalist , and is a collection of poems about, and in the voice of, Merian. Many of these are what are known as personna poems. The second section of poems is entitled The Beekeeper's Wife , and uses autobiography as a framework for communicating the humor in human relationships, and for illustrating the surrealism in the human race's relationships with the natural world.

Restlessness, Revision, And Multigenre, Jennifer Bradbury
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
This thesis explores the importance of restlessness in revision from the perspective of a writer and teacher of writing. This phenomenon, which naturally recurs throughout the writing process, is key to understanding what effective revision is and how to do it most effectively. The thesis has a secondary focus on multigenre writing because it offers a powerful means for understanding revision and conducting it authentically. Thus, both the content and structure of the thesis strive to present and apply the theories of restless revision and multigenre writing.

'Willa Cather’S ‘River Of Silver Sound’: Woman As Ecosystem In The Song Of The Lark, Matthew Sivils
Matthew Sivils
Willa Cather loved the Southwest. The landscapes and cu ltural history of the area held a prominent place in both her fiction and in her own creative consciousness.1 As Judith Fryer points out, after Cather visited New Mexico and Arizona in 1912, she became so enamored with the region that she returned many times over the fol lowing decade (41). During this period Cather published a novel heavily inspired by her affection for the Southwestern landscape-The Song of the Lark. This novel fol lows Thea Kronborg from her childhood in the fictional rural town of Moonstone, Colorado, through an artistic …

At Risk: Teaching and Writing Outside the Safety Zone
In 1983, the National Commission on Excellence in Education released its damning indictment of American education. In the opening sentence of the report, the authors announce: "Our Nation is at risk." National prosperity, security, and civility are being "eroded by a rising tide of mediocrity" resulting from the failures of our schools and colleges.
Within this context "risk," defined by Webster's as "the possibility of suffering loss," is something to be avoided, or, if that is not possible, something to be managed. Thus, children struggling for success in school …
