From Falling Beams To Fallen Souls : The Ethical Development Of The Hard-Boiled Detective Novel, Kevin Chaffee

The hard-boiled detective story ushered in a revolution in the mystery story. The older "formal" mystery story saw society as a benevolent, ordering force which the detective restored by catching the murderer, while the hard-boiled mystery portrayed society as corrupt, wild and flawed, and presented an implicit criticism of it. The three best writers of the hard-boiled school, Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler, and Ross Macdonald, show an ethical progression, a turning outward, from the personal, inwardly focused ethics of Hammett's characters to the outwardly turned moral understanding of Macdonald's hero.

Biographical Themes In T. S. Eliot's Early Poetry, Jeo-Yong Noh

English Theses & Dissertations

Throughout his career, T. S. Eliot developed his central poetic doctrine, the theory of poetic impersonality. Because of the importance of this theory to Eliot, a question is raised about its importance to his own poetry. Some recent critics, examining Eliot's poetry in the light of his memoirs and biographies, have found that Eliot was not governed by his theory. My thesis is designed to continue this investigation which so far has been done incompletely and randomly.

Learning to write their own words increases students' success in learning to read, provides practice in thinking skills, increases their self-concept and provides early positive attitudes about writing.

However, most writing done in first grade classrooms today consists mainly of copying from the blackboard. This is a tedious and boring task for first graders, and gives them bad attitudes about writing as they begin their school careers. Many teachers don't require young students to write their own words because of the students' inability to spell words and form grammatically correct sentences. Auden shares with most of his contemporaries, including Yeats and Eliot, the goal of lighting modern man's way back to a sense of harmony with his universe--the certainty of identity which his ancestors enjoyed. In New Year Letter, Auden announces that the problem lies within man himself because each of us is possessed of a "double" nature, thus rendering us our own schismatics.
