Talking to Reginald McKnight is like scanning an imaginary worldwide radio dial. At any given moment he can transform his pleasant speaking voice into a raspy, aged, Middle Eastern-by-way-of-New York accent - or a deep Southern drawl. In an instant he can switch from a precise West African dialect to hip, urban street lingo, and then effortlessly segue back to his normal voice. McKnight says he "hit the ground running" as a mimic, and his talent was broadened as he lived all over the United States as the son of an Air Force sergeant. His time spent on the road …

Gothic horror narratives have been a mainstay of American literature since Charles Brockden Brown's 1798 novel Wieland, and also of our cinema since the celebrated Universal films Dracula and Frankenstein in 1931. Often considered tripe by professional literary and film critics, such tales—both in written and cinematic form—began to gamer intellectual attention during the 1970s as their general popularity soared and as academic interest in American popular culture increased significantly. In “The Fountain,” we revive a tradition dating back to the earliest days of the journal. Edie Shillue spent a year living in Northern Ireland, wandering the streets of Derry and Belfast, the byways of the villages and the country towns, enjoying the “crack,” tossing back more than the odd pint of Guinness — and taking it all in, filling notebook after notebook with her keen observations and acute insights — definitely a different view of the conflict in Northern Ireland, but fastidious to a fault. The Long Road Home, a short prose epic, concerns the adventure and political coming-of-age of two sixteen-year-old boys, Dean and Blake. The boys hitchhike from their hometown of Pittsburgh to Greensboro, North Carolina in order to attend a march against the Ku Klux Klan. Dean and Blake are politically idealistic and naïve boys who learn a lot about the complexities of race relations in America on their adventure. The boys encounter a variety of people on their trip and in Greensboro, some of whom are hostile, friendly, indifferent, deceptive, generous, and downright strange.
