This thesis consists of three short stories in very different genres but tied together by a intensely personal look at the lives of its protagonists culminating in epiphanies. This creative thesis, entitled Carnival Glass: A Collection of Poems, contains a series of poems representative of the writer's expanding vision and growth as a poet. An introduction precedes the work, wherein the writer attempts to draw explicit connections between the tangible world and the page on which it is recorded and recreated. The subject matter of these poems reflects aspects of daily living filtered through the writer's personal experience. This thesis explores the importance of restlessness in revision from the perspective of a writer and teacher of writing. This phenomenon, which naturally recurs throughout the writing process, is key to understanding what effective revision is and how to do it most effectively. The thesis has a secondary focus on multigenre writing because it offers a powerful means for understanding revision and conducting it authentically. Thus, both the content and structure of the thesis strive to present and apply the theories of restless revision and multigenre writing.

The image of the long distance runner is one that has been present in literature as far back as the writings of the ancient Greeks. In this creative thesis, a collection of short stories and poems, the image of the distance runner is delved into and fleshed out. Stories, paired with poems, represent the different seasons of the year, and the work as a whole presents the runner's year. Throughout the works, the act of running and the running lifestyle work as metaphors for the lives of the characters portrayed.

This dissertation contains an essay with the above title, as well as two sections of poems. The first section of poems is entitled Maria Sibylla Merian, Artist and Naturalist , and is a collection of poems about, and in the voice of, Merian. Many of these are what are known as personna poems. The second section of poems is entitled The Beekeeper's Wife , and uses autobiography as a framework for communicating the humor in human relationships, and for illustrating the surrealism in the human race's relationships with the natural world.
