วิทยานิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มีจุดประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาสภาพการเปลี่ยนผ่านมนุษย์ของแนวคิดทรานส์ฮิวแมนนิสม์และเพื่อศึกษาการเปลี่ยนผ่านด้านร่างกาย ประชาน และที่อยู่อาศัย เพื่อขยายนิคมสู่อวกาศในงานบันเทิงคดีและเกมแนววิทยาศาสตร์ร่วมสมัยคัดสรรจำนวนสี่เรื่อง ได้แก่ นวนิยาย Alphanauts (2006) โดย J. Brian Clarke ภาพยนตร์ Avatar (2009) กำกับโดย James Cameron ภาพยนตร์ Space Sweepers (2021) กำกับโดย Jo Sung-Hee และเกม Mass Effect: Legendary Edition (2023) กำกับโดย Casey Hudson ผลการวิจัยสรุปได้ว่าการขยายนิคมสู่อวกาศในบันเทิงคดีและเกมแนววิทยาศาสตร์ร่วมสมัยสัมพันธ์กับสภาพการเปลี่ยนผ่านมนุษย์ กล่าวคือ พื้นที่อวกาศเป็นช่องทางสำหรับการธำรงเผ่าพันธุ์มนุษย์ ผู้เสริมสมรรถภาพทางกายและจิตใจเพื่อปรับตัวให้เหมาะสมกับสภาพแวดล้อมอันตรายและภัยคุกคามจากต่างดาว การใช้เทคโนโลยีสร้างสภาพการเปลี่ยนผ่านมนุษย์ให้พ้นข้อจำกัดพื้นฐานตามธรรมชาติและมนุษย์ภาวะเปรียบได้กับการวิวัฒนาการครั้งใหม่ของมนุษย์ การศึกษากลุ่มตัวบทเปิดเผยว่าความสำเร็จในการวิวัฒนาการนี้จำเป็นต้องเปลี่ยนผ่านด้านร่างกาย ประชานและที่อยู่อาศัยร่วมกัน กล่าวคือ การอาศัยความก้าวหน้าทางเทคโนโลยีเพื่อบูรณาการร่างกายและจิตใจ เพื่อยกระดับมนุษย์เป็นผู้กระทำที่มีความสามารถในการรับรู้อย่างลึกซึ้ง ผู้ปรับตัวเข้ากับสภาพแวดล้อมได้อย่างกลมกลืน การพัฒนาสิ่งแวดล้อมโดยใช้เทคโนโลยีจะเปลี่ยนผ่านเผ่าพันธุ์มนุษย์สู่สิ่งมีชีวิตเชิงนิเวศที่เรียนรู้และปรับตัวเพื่อให้ดำรงอาศัยในอวกาศอย่างยั่งยืน ทั้งนี้ เพื่อหลีกเลี่ยงสภาวะปลีกแยกระหว่างร่างกายกับจิตใจ การลดทอนคุณค่าความเป็นมนุษย์ และการครอบครองระบบนิเวศอย่างเบ็ดเสร็จ

การสั่นคลอนขั้วตรงข้ามในการ์ตูนโทรทัศน์ชุดโคนันเดอะซีรีส์, สุธาสินี ไชยธนะพัชร์

วิทยานิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาการสั่นคลอนขั้วตรงข้าม (Binary Oppositions) 3 ขั้ว ได้แก่ ชาย-หญิง ความเป็นกลุ่ม-ความเป็นปัจเจก และผู้ใหญ่-เด็กที่ปรากฏในการ์ตูนโทรทัศน์ชุด โคนันเดอะซีรีส์ ปีที่ 1-5 ของบริษัททีเอ็มเอส เอ็นเตอร์เทนเมนต์ (1996-1999) ฉบับพากย์ไทยรวมถึงศึกษาบริบทของสังคมญี่ปุ่นที่เกี่ยวข้องกับตัวบท จากการศึกษาพบว่าตัวบทพยายามนำเสนอให้เห็นถึงความเป็นไปได้ของขั้วอำนาจรองในการท้าทายและสั่นคลอนขนบวรรณกรรมแนวสืบสวนสอบสวนและบริบทวัฒนธรรมญี่ปุ่นดั้งเดิมอันเป็นบรรทัดฐานที่มีอยู่ในสังคม กล่าวคือในขณะที่ประเทศญี่ปุ่นเปิดรับอิทธิพลตะวันตกเข้ามาเป็นส่วนหนึ่งในการพัฒนาประเทศ ทัศนคติที่มีต่อค่านิยมดั้งเดิมของคนในสังคมบางกลุ่มได้เปลี่ยนแปลงไป ไม่ว่าจะเป็นแนวคิดเรื่องความเท่าเทียมทางเพศ แนวคิดเรื่องปัจเจกนิยม หรือ ทัศนคติที่มีต่อเด็ก ส่งผลให้เกิดการพลิกขั้วที่ปรากฏในตัวบท ได้แก่ การพลิกขั้วของเพศหญิง แนวคิดปัจเจกนิยมและเด็ก อย่างไรก็ตามการพลิกขั้วที่ปรากฏในตัวบทมีทั้งการพลิกขั้วที่ล้มเหลวของเพศหญิงและแนวคิดปัจเจกนิยมเนื่องจากกระบวนการพลิกขั้วของตัวละครทำให้ตัวละครกลายเป็นอาชญากรที่เป็นอันตรายจึงต้องถูกกำจัดออกจากสังคม ในขณะเดียวกันตัวบทก็นำเสนอการพลิกขั้วของเด็กที่ประสบความสำเร็จ แม้ว่าจะไม่ได้เป็นการพลิกขั้วอย่างเบ็ดเสร็จแต่ก็เป็นการเพิ่มพื้นที่ให้เด็กในวรรณกรรมแนวสืบสวนสอบสวนมากขึ้น การพลิกขั้วที่มีทั้งล้มเหลวและสำเร็จนี้สะท้อนให้เห็นว่า ขนบและบริบททางวัฒนธรรมดั้งเดิมของญี่ปุ่นบางอย่างยังคงมีอิทธิพลอยู่อย่างไม่อาจปฏิเสธได้

สารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มุ่งศึกษาบทบาทของ “การนอนหลับ” ในนวนิยายเรื่อง My Year of Rest and Relaxation (2018) ของ Ottessa Moshfegh โดยวิเคราะห์ว่าการนอนหลับในเรื่องดังกล่าวมิได้เป็นเพียงกลไกในการหลีกหนีจากสังคมและเยียวยาบาดแผลทางจิตใจเพื่อนำไปสู่การหล่อหลอมตัวตนแบบใหม่ที่พึงปรารถนาเท่านั้น หากยังทำหน้าที่เป็นเครื่องมือในการยืนยันสถานะความเป็นอภิสิทธิ์ชน และในการสร้างความเป็นอื่นและความเหลื่อมล้ำทางเชื้อชาติ ชนชั้น และเพศสภาพ ซึ่งนำไปสู่การต่อรองทางอัตลักษณ์ที่เกี่ยวข้อง โดยเห็นได้จากการวิเคราะห์ภูมิหลังทางครอบครัว ตลอดจนแนวคิดและการกระทำของตัวละครเอกซึ่งเป็นหญิงผิวขาวชนชั้นสูงในสังคมอเมริกัน รวมถึงความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างตัวละครเอกกับตัวละครอื่น ๆ ที่แวดล้อม โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งในด้านที่เกี่ยวข้องกับการนอนหลับของตัวละครเอก ผลการวิเคราะห์ยังแสดงให้เห็นว่าฉากหลังของเรื่อง—ซึ่งเกิดขึ้นในเขตแมนแฮตตันในมหานครนิวยอร์กและครอบคลุมช่วงเวลาก่อนและระหว่างเหตุการณ์ 9/11—อาจสะท้อนให้เห็นความเชื่อมโยงระหว่างความเหลื่อมล้ำที่ปรากฏในระดับความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างตัวละครกับความเหลื่อมล้ำในสังคมวงกว้าง

การศึกษากลวิธีการแปลอติพจน์ในนวนิยายเรื่อง Crazy Rich Asians ของ Kevin Kwan หรือ เหลี่ยมโบตั๋น แปลโดย ศศิ พินทุ์, สุตาภัทร อรุณนวล

สารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มุ่งศึกษาศึกษากลวิธีการแปลประโยคอติพจน์จากภาษาอังกฤษเป็นภาษาไทย ในนวนิยายเรื่อง Crazy Rich Asians ของ Kevin Kwan (2513) และฉบับแปลภาษาไทย เหลี่ยมโบตั๋น แปลโดย ศศิ พินทุ์ (2559) รวมถึงปัจจัยทางวัฒนธรรมบางประการที่ส่งผลต่อการแปลอติพจน์จากภาษาอังกฤษเป็นภาษาไทย ผู้วิจัยได้คัดเลือกประโยคที่ปรากฏการใช้อติพจน์จำนวน 60 ประโยค ตามแนวทางการจำแนกประเภทอติพจน์ของ Claudia Claridge (2011) และใช้กรอบการวิเคราะห์แนวทางการแปลความเปรียบและสำนวนภาษา (Trope Change) ของ Andrew Chesterman (2001) จากการจำแนกประเภทอติพจน์ที่ปรากฏในประโยคต้นฉบับภาษาอังกฤษ จำนวน 60 ประโยค พบอติพจน์ในตัวบทต้นฉบับ 6 ประเภท ได้แก่ อติพจน์แบบคำเดียว อติพจน์ระดับวลี อติพจน์ระดับอนุประโยค อติพจน์ที่แสดงจำนวน การเปรียบเทียบขั้นสูงสุด และการใช้การเปรียบเทียบ โดยแบ่งเป็นอติพจน์ประเภทเดียวประโยคจำนวน 53 ประโยค และใช้อติพจน์มากกว่าหนึ่งประเภทร่วมกัน จำนวน 7 ประโยค จากการวิเคราะห์พบว่ากลวิธีที่ผู้แปลเลือกใช้ในการแปลประโยคอติพจน์ที่คัดสรรจำนวน 67 แห่ง มีทั้งหมด 3 กลวิธี ได้แก่ การรักษาอติพจน์หรือใช้สำนวนภาษาประเภทเดิม (55 แห่ง) เปลี่ยนไปใช้อติพจน์หรือสำนวนภาษาประเภทอื่น (3 ครั้ง) และแปลโดยไม่เก็บอติพจน์หรือสำนวนภาษา (9 แห่ง) โดยกลวิธีที่พบมากที่สุดคือ คงความเปรียบหรือสำนวนภาษาประเภทเดิม นอกจากนี้ยังพบว่าประเด็นที่เกี่ยวข้องกับเรื่องเพศ เป็นปัจจัยทางวัฒนธรรมที่ส่งผลต่อการแปลอติพจน์จากภาษาอังกฤษเป็นภาษาไทย ซึ่งผู้แปลเลือกใช้กลวิธีการกรองทางวัฒนธรรม (cultural filtering) ควบคู่กับการคงความเปรียบหรือสำนวนภาษาประเภทเดิม โดยใช้คำที่มีความหมายต่างกัน หากแต่ยังมีความเชื่อมโยงกันในแง่ของการสื่อความ จึงทำให้เห็นภาพการเปรียบเทียบไปในทำนองเดียวกันกับต้นฉบับโดยหลีกเลี่ยงการใช้ถ้อยคำที่สื่อความทางเพศอย่างโจ่งแจ้ง เพื่อให้เหมาะสมกับบริบทวัฒนธรรมไทย

แนวทางการแปลข้อความแสดงอุปลักษณ์เชิงมโนทัศน์ในบทความสารคดีของนิตยสาร National Geographic จากภาษาอังกฤษเป็นภาษาไทย, สริตา บูรณะสัมฤทธิ

สารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มุ่งศึกษาอุปลักษณ์เชิงมโนทัศน์ในตัวบทสารคดีวิทยาศาสตร์จากนิตยสาร National Geographic และกลวิธีการถ่ายทอดอุปลักษณ์เชิงมโนทัศน์จากต้นฉบับอังกฤษไปยังฉบับแปลภาษาไทย ผู้วิจัยศึกษาแนวคิดอุปลักษณ์เชิงมโนทัศน์ของ Lakoff และ Johnson (2003) แนวทางการระบุรูปภาษาที่แสดงอุปลักษณ์ของกลุ่ม Pragglejaz Group แนวทางการแปลอุปลักษณ์เชิงมโนทัศน์จากงานวิจัยตัวบทประเภทต่าง ๆ ตลอดจนประเภทอุปลักษณ์ที่พบในตัวบทวิทยาศาสตร์และสารคดี และประยุกต์ใช้กรอบการวิเคราะห์กลวิธีการแปลของ Papadoudi (2010) Schäffner (2004) Deignan et al. (1997) และ Toury (1995) ในการวิเคราะห์ข้อมูล ผลการวิจัยพบว่า จากข้อมูลอุปลักษณ์เชิงมโนทัศน์ที่เก็บจำนวน 126 ตัวอย่าง มีจำนวนรูปภาษาแสดงอุปลักษณ์ทั้งหมด 114 รูป สามารถจำแนกอุปลักษณ์ที่พบได้ 19 ประเภท เรียงลำดับจากมากที่สุดไปน้อยที่สุด ได้แก่ อุปลักษณ์สงคราม อุปลักษณ์มนุษย์ อุปลักษณ์การเดินทาง อุปลักษณ์เชิงกายภาพ อุปลักษณ์สิ่งมีชีวิต อุปลักษณ์คอมพิวเตอร์ อุปลักษณ์ศิลปะ อุปลักษณ์ธุรกิจ อุปลักษณ์เครื่องนุ่งห่ม อุปลักษณ์สุขภาพ อุปลักษณ์เกม กีฬา และการแข่งขัน อุปลักษณ์ก่อสร้าง อุปลักษณ์เครื่องจักร อุปลักษณ์พืชและการเพาะปลูก อุปลักษณ์เชิงทิศทาง อุปลักษณ์อาหาร อุปลักษณ์สัตว์ อุปลักษณ์ศาสนา และอุปลักษณ์ภัยธรรมชาติ จากการวิเคราะห์ พบว่าอุปลักษณ์ที่พบในภาษาอังกฤษปรากฏในภาษาไทยทุกประเภท ยกเว้นอุปลักษณ์ภัยธรรมชาติ ผลการวิเคราะห์บทแปลแตกต่างไปจากสมมติฐานเดิมที่ตั้งไว้ว่ากลวิธีการแปลที่พบมากสุดคือการแปลอุปลักษณ์โดยรักษามโนทัศน์เดิม การแปลอุปลักษณ์โดยใช้มโนทัศน์ที่แตกต่างกัน และการแปลโดยไม่รักษาอุปลักษณ์ ตามลำดับ แต่ผลการวิจัยพบว่ากลวิธีการแปลที่พบมากสุด ได้แก่ 1) การแปลโดยรักษามโนทัศน์เดิมและใช้รูปภาษาเหมือนเดิม พบร้อยละ 52.34 2) การแปลโดยไม่รักษาอุปลักษณ์ พบร้อยละ 21.09 3) การแปลโดยรักษามโนทัศน์เดิมแต่ใช้รูปภาษาที่ต่างไปจากเดิม พบร้อยละ 10.94 4) การแปลโดยใช้มโนทัศน์ที่ต่างกัน พบร้อยละ 10.16 5) การตัดอุปลักษณ์ในภาษาต้นทางทิ้ง พบร้อยละ 3.91 และ 6) การแปลสิ่งที่ไม่ใช่อุปลักษณ์เป็นอุปลักษณ์ พบร้อยละ 1.56 ทั้งนี้ ไม่พบการเพิ่มอุปลักษณ์เชิงมโนทัศน์ลงไปในบทแปล โดยสรุป อุปลักษณ์ในตัวบทสารคดีวิทยาศาสตร์จากภาษาอังกฤษสามารถถ่ายทอดเป็นภาษาไทยได้เป็นส่วนใหญ่โดยไม่มีอุปสรรค โดยอุปลักษณ์แต่ละประเภทสามารถถ่ายทอดได้ผ่านกลวิธีที่แตกต่างกัน …

สารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษากลวิธีการแปลภาษาภาพพจน์เชิงเปรียบเทียบที่มี มโนอุปลักษณ์แฝงอยู่ในงานเขียนด้านปรัชญาการออกแบบสถาปัตยกรรม ซึ่งมักปรากฏการใช้คำศัพท์เชิงนามธรรมและภาษาภาพพจน์ (Figurative language) ที่โดดเด่นเพื่อสื่อถึงมโนทัศน์ทางปรัชญา (Philosophical concept) ผู้วิจัยเลือกศึกษาหนังสือ เรื่อง The Eyes of the Skin: Architecture and the Senses ของ จูฮานิ พาลาสมา (Juhani Pallasmaa) งานเขียนสำคัญในแวดวงสถาปัตยกรรมเชิงทฤษฎีที่มีรากฐานแนวคิดจากปรากฏการณ์วิทยา (Phenomenology) และการตั้งคำถามต่อแนวคิดดวงตาเป็นศูนย์กลางของการรับรู้ (Ocularcentrism) โดยเนื้อหานี้เป็นพื้นฐานสำคัญในการศึกษาการออกแบบสถาปัตยกรรม แต่ยังไม่เคยมีการศึกษากลวิธีการแปลหนังสือประเภทนี้อย่างเป็นระบบในบริบทภาษาไทย ในการวิเคราะห์ตัวบท เลือกพิจารณาส่วนที่ 2 (Part 2) จำนวน 34 หน้า พบว่ามีลักษณะของการใช้ภาษาภาพพจน์เปรียบเทียบที่มีมิติของมโนทัศน์ทางปรัชญาแฝงอยู่ โดยเฉพาะมโนทัศน์ที่เป็นมโนอุปลักษณ์ (Conceptual metaphor) เชิงภววิทยา (Ontological metaphor) ซึ่งสะท้อนกรอบความคิดของผู้เขียนที่ได้รับอิทธิพลมาจากปรากฏการณ์วิทยา การแปลเนื้อหาดังกล่าวจึงจำเป็นต้องทำความเข้าใจความหมายแฝงและความหมายเชิงมโนทัศน์ (Connotative and conceptual meaning) เพื่อถ่ายทอดเจตนารมณ์และความลึกซึ้งของต้นฉบับได้อย่างแม่นยำในขั้นตอนการแปล ได้ประยุกต์ใช้แนวทางการแปลแบบตีความ (Interpretive approach) ของ ฌอง เดอลิลส์ (Jean Delisle) ร่วมกับทฤษฎีการตรงประเด็น (Relevance theory) ของ แอ็นสท์ ออกุสท์ กัทท์ (Ernst August Gutt) โดยมุ่งเน้นการแปลด้วยการตีความและการสร้างความหมายที่เทียบเคียงต้นฉบับ (Interpretive resemblance) เพื่อรักษาความหมายเชิงมโนทัศน์ คุณลักษณะของภาษาภาพพจน์ และถ่ายทอดแนวคิดของผู้เขียนให้สอดคล้องกับบริบทภาษาไทย

ตั้งแต่คริสต์ศักราช 1953 เป็นต้นมา สาธารณรัฐอาหรับอียิปต์ตกอยู่ภายใต้การปกครองระบอบเผด็จการทหาร แนวคิดอนุรักษ์นิยมของรัฐบาลเผด็จการทหารส่งผลให้ประชาชนชาวอียิปต์ถูกลิดรอนสิทธิเสรีภาพ โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งกลุ่มสตรีชาวอียิปต์ การกดขี่สตรีเพศส่งผลให้กลุ่มสตรีอียิปต์ออกมาเรียกร้องสิทธิเสรีภาพให้กลุ่มของตน โดยมีแกนนำคนสำคัญอย่าง นาวัล เอ็ล ซัดดาวี จิตแพทย์หญิงชาวอียิปต์ซึ่งผันตัวมาเป็นนักเขียน งานเขียนของซัดดาวีใช้กลวิธีการเล่าในรูปแบบเรื่องเล่าชีวิต (life writing) โดยให้ผู้หญิงเป็นศูนย์กลางของเรื่องเล่าผ่านมุมมองของผู้เล่าที่เป็นสตรีและนำเสนอความรุนแรงทางเพศที่กระทำต่อเรือนร่างสตรี อาทิ การถูกขริบอวัยวะเพศ การทำร้ายร่างกายจากคนในครอบครัว การข่มขืน การค้าประเวณี ความรุนแรงดังกล่าวเผยให้เห็นอำนาจปิตาธิปไตยที่เชื่อมโยงกับศาสนาและจารีตประเพณี เพื่อสร้างความชอบธรรมให้กับการกดขี่สตรีเพศในสังคมอียิปต์ งานเขียนของซัดดาวีไม่เพียงแต่แสดงให้เห็นอำนาจปิตาธิปไตยที่กระทำต่อสตรีผ่านเรือนร่างเท่านั้น หากยังบอกเล่าเรื่องราวประสบการณ์ของผู้หญิงโดยใช้เรือนร่างในการเรียกร้องสิทธิเสรีภาพให้กับสตรีชาวอียิปต์อีกด้วย กล่าวคือ ในงานของซัดดาวี เรือนร่างเป็นเสมือนหลักฐานที่เผยให้เห็นสถานภาพของสตรีในฐานะพลเมืองชั้นสองในสังคมอียิปต์ นอกจากนี้ เรือนร่างยังมีบทบาทในการร้อยรัดสายสัมพันธ์ระหว่างผู้หญิงจากชนชั้นต่าง ๆ ผ่านประสบการณ์และอารมณ์ความรู้สึกที่ผู้หญิงเหล่านี้มีร่วมกัน เรือนร่างจึงเป็นพื้นที่ของการต่อสู้ทางการเมืองในการเรียกร้องสิทธิเสรีภาพให้กับสตรีชาวอียิปต์ ดังนั้น งานเขียนของซัดดาวีจึงไม่เพียงวิพากษ์อำนาจปิตาธิปไตยในประเทศอียิปต์ หากยังขยายกรอบแนวคิดเรื่องสิทธิสตรีตะวันตก ที่เน้นการยึดกฎของเหตุผลซึ่งเป็นนามธรรมเพียงอย่างเดียว จนละเลยอารมณ์ความรู้สึกที่ซับซ้อนของมนุษย์ในฐานะปัจเจกชน

When “gender” was translated to Icelandic in 1998 as kyngervi, the notion of performative gender had been circulating in Icelandic academia for a little over a year. This study used a survey to investigate self-study and university-enrolled Chinese learners’ habits in studying Chinese vocabulary in order to determine what study methods influence a.) learners’ confidence in learning Chinese vocabulary and b.) what aspects of Chinese vocabulary they consider easy or difficult. We were particularly interested in seeing what the data had to say about students’ attitudes towards characters and the written language, given that the field of Chinese language pedagogy is known for a stronger focus on the written language as opposed to the spoken language. Where many define nihilism as the belief that life and all moral principles are meaningless, the French philosopher, Michel Onfray, expounds on this classic definition and argues that true nihilism is the refusal to accept the world as it is. Unlike monotheistic religions and totalitarian regimes that urge their followers to practice asceticism now to attain happiness in the future, Onfray believes that hedonistic pleasure can be found when the individual rediscovers autonomy and returns to an atomistic worldview that is immersed in the imminent.

This article analyzes Luiz Roberto Salinas Fortes’ Retrato calado (Silent Portrait) published in 1988, considering the theoretical discussions on testimonio's epistemology—addressing the challenge of narrating trauma and the risk of stylization. It compares Fortes' memoir with Fernando Gabeira's O que é isso, companheiro? (What's This, Comrade?) from 1979, examining diverse approaches to capturing historical trauma through literature and its impact on collective memory about Brazilian Dictatorship (1964-1985).

This paper highlights the significance of physical proximity and the potentiality of socio-spatial situations as tools to enrich study abroad programs. Particular attention is given to street art and the public space. While, studying on-site can be somewhat uncomfortable, it can potentially prompt unique reflections, enhance student’s learning and encourage introspection. Being on-site provides the opportunity to come into contact and to connect with the physical objects and their environment. It enables a multisensory and immersive embodied experience. Leveraging art for communicative educational activities can facilitate a participatory experience, promote critical thinking and enhance cultural understanding.

Abstract: Many French fantastic texts from the nineteenth century employ the use of a femme-fatale to highlight and underscore the dangers inherit with the female figure. This can be seen in vampires, ghosts, fairies, and other supernatural phenomena wherein a female character takes on incredible attributes. Propser Mérimée’s Lokis offers readers a tale wherein those same female figures are given traits that resemble the traditional femme-fatale, but in doing so they highlight the deadly nature of the titular half-man/half-bear creature. On Jan. 1, 2022, A.A. Milne’s willy, nilly, silly old bear entered the public domain, but this paper will argue why Disney's version will most likely retain its longevity despite additional competition. Disney's franchise-ation of Winnie the Pooh has left their iteration of the bear at the forefront of audience's minds. While Disney's version retains its iconic image of the bear, however, the release of the character into the public domain will allow others to utilize the bear in new ways. Self-Effacement In Christian Mysticism: A Case Study Of Teresa Of Ávila And Simone Weil, Zihan Zhang

Comparative Literature M.A. Essays

The neoliberal society we live in encourages a constant maximization of the “project of the self.” The tradition of Christian mysticism, centered on self-denial and passivity, provides an alternative understanding of the self. In this essay, I draw testimonial and theoretical accounts of mysticism from the autobiography of a 16th-century Spanish nun, Teresa of Ávila, and essays from a 20th-century French philosopher, Simone Weil. By bringing these two authors in conversation, I hope to illuminate three aspects of self-effacement in the Christian mystical tradition.
