Favissa: Past Archaeological Excavation Reports

In August 1982, a salvage excavation was conducted south of Kibbutz Nirim, about one km northwest of the Ma’on synagogue (map ref. 1432/5821), following the discovery of pottery and architectural elements during tree planting by the Jewish National Fund. The excavation, on behalf of the Department of Antiquities and Museums, was directed by I. Eldar, with the assistance of Y. Segal (Surveying).

Favissa: Past Archaeological Excavation Reports

In July–December 1982, salvage excavations were conducted at the Neve Noy neighborhood of Be'er Sheva, near the Bir Safadi site (map ref. 1789/5709). The excavations were directed by Y. Baumgarten and I. Eldar. Eight subterranean units that had been hewn in the loess soil were exposed, which were dated to the Chalcolithic period. Around them were many refuse pits containing pottery vessels, flint flakes, pebbles and ash. The entrances to the subterranean structures were through courtyards, from which tunnels branched out into rooms, most of which were square. As part of a survey and excavation project conducted on behalf of the Archaeological Survey Association of Israel and the Department of Antiquities and Museums between 1980 and 1988, a trial excavation was carried out on the southern slopes of Giv’at Masu’a (Nahal Rephaim) in May 1982. The excavation was directed by G. Edelstein, with assistance of T. Waks (photography), S. Gibson and Y. Fleitman (surveying).

Favissa: Past Archaeological Excavation Reports

In 1981, a salvage excavation was conducted in Tiberias, on a private plot owned by the Ella Brothers. The excavation, on behalf of the Department of Antiquities and Museums, was directed by R. Sivan and G. Solar. Remains of modern houses were discovered, which included sections of walls and stone paving. Below the modern walls were basalt walls built on top of basalt columns (diam. c. 30 cm), mostly made of drums placed one on top of the other. At the bottom of the walls, the excavation reached the water.

This is a regional study of the continuous use of the gorgoneion in Greek architecture from the Archaic through the Classical and Hellenistic periods. These later phases have been largely ignored as previous research on the gorgoneion has tended to concentrate on examples from the early periods.

The study is divided into two parts: a comprehensive catalogue (Part II) which compiles all of the architectural gorgoneia known through publications and personal observation; and the main text (Part I) which is a synthesis of the evidence derived from the catalogue. Throughout the history of Judah a series of fortification systems was constructed to assist in the military protection of Judah. These systems changed over time in order to meet the military and political situations then present in the Levant. This thesis is a study of the changing patterns of fortification in southwest Judah throughout its existence.

Prior to the time of Rehoboam, Israel and Judah were protected first by the mobile armies of Saul and David and later by four major centers which garrisoned the troops of Solomon. Additional Solomonic fortification was erected for internal usage in what became known …

In October 1980, a salvage excavation was conducted at a site near the southern bank of the ʻAda Stream channel, close to Or ʻAqiva (map. ref. 19401/71144), under the direction of A. Zigelman and S. Yankelevich. A section of a structure belonging to the settlement was uncovered, which the excavators dated to the Persian and Hellenistic periods.

Favissa: Past Archaeological Excavation Reports

In 1980, an excavation was conducted at Tel Qedesh, on the north-facing slope (map ref. 249600/780025), under the direction of D. Amir. The aim of the excavation was to clarify the stratigraphy and chronological sequence of the layers previously exposed by Y. Aharoni in 1953. From the top of the section down the slope, a series of pits were excavated in which remains of a mudbrick wall — identified by Aharoni — were revealed. This wall had previously been exposed in a section created during the construction of the “Northern Road” and was dated to the Early Bronze Age I–II.
