Earth Forms, Janelle Marie Tullis Mock
Earth Forms, Janelle Marie Tullis Mock
Theses and Dissertations
Earth Forms narrates and explains the Masters Project Exhibition by the same name. The sculptures included in the exhibition, Earth Forms, use a variety of personal symbols centered on one stylized human head. Some of the symbols included are antlers, branches, coral, leaves, plants and stones. Each of these symbols represents personal ideas of balance, growth and decay. They also represent the earth from which we are formed and the earth to which our bodies will return at the end of life.
Wunderkammer, Dai Toyofuku
Wunderkammer, Dai Toyofuku
CGU MFA Theses
I manufacture objects that confuse classification and cross boundaries. Part unicorn horn and part Narwhal tusk, these objects straddle categorical containers. My sculptures attempt to break free from inherited structures of knowledge and modes of seeing. The boxes and pedestals are akin to these imposed structures, though these traditional structures always fall just short of fulfilling their supposed function; these categorical containers slowly leak.

CGU MFA Theses
My work focuses on the fantastic and the peculiar. It grows out of an interest in animals, myth, and the human tendency to anthropomorphize.
Doubting Thomas, Michael K. Carter
Doubting Thomas, Michael K. Carter
CGU MFA Theses
My work is a deliberate attempt at a personal sense of wrongness. I believe that encountering this wrongness is more sincere and revealing of myself and my audience then any attempt at correctness could be. I feel there is a vulnerability and exposure in being the first to speak up, to leap before looking, to react without thinking, analyze or process experience.

BLACK, WHITE, BROWN Aisha Shani Harrison, M.F.A University of Nebraska, 2010
Adviser: Gail Kendall
I address emotions and perceptions that are complex and multifaceted. My goal is for the work to communicate these emotions in a way that makes them accessible to others. Most people have felt disconnected, longing, anticipation, relief, anger, frustration and have experienced internal conflict. While this work touches on these emotions, there is, because of who I am, a set of questions I am asking regarding racial identity.
This autobiographical work is a series of ceramic figures that are engaged with symbolic objects which together form …
Igolf: Contemporary Sculptures Exhibition 2009, King Lun Kisslan Chan
Igolf: Contemporary Sculptures Exhibition 2009, King Lun Kisslan Chan
Theses and Dissertations
Why "igolf"? I love golfing, especially enjoying the gigantic space of the golf course. More importantly, this is the place where I dream and get inspiration for my art. I imagine filling my own global golf course with monumental golf sculptures in the future. This motivation and enthusiasm has modified my direction in creating sculpture. I named my final MFA exhibition "igolf". The idea of the name comes from modern terms we find in popular devices, such as the iPhone, iPod, and the iMac that reflect our technological world. In addition, the sound for "i" shares the same sound of …
Leland F. Prince's Earth Divers, Leland Fred Prince
Leland F. Prince's Earth Divers, Leland Fred Prince
Theses and Dissertations
My stoneware sculptures in my MFA final project were named Earth Divers because clay as a material is earth and clay is also symbolic of the Earth. The way that I physically dive into clay up to my elbows is a poetic performance. The sculptures were built in sections horizontally and then stacked vertically. I began the process by first making life size plaster molds of the human figure taken from live people. Earth Divers take their architectural structure specifically from the organic curves of the negative voids that are characteristic of the plaster figure molds. I built into these …

Generative Response., Catherine Juanita Martin
Generative Response., Catherine Juanita Martin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Within this supporting paper, the artist discusses Generative Response, her Master of Fine Arts exhibition. This paper is a narrative of the artist's development, philosophies, and methodologies. Further, it illustrates how her work and development have been affected by studies in humanity, social activism, human responsibility, and environmental consciousness.
Generative Response communicated the artist's ideology of process as metaphor for living life, involving the viewer in an "unfinished dialogue" wherein works of art undergo processes translating their role as part of a generative cycle. Generative Response was composed of seven sculptural components called "stations" depicting the processes of growth, …
A Call For Liberation: Aleijadinho's 'Prophets' As Capoeiristas, Monica Jayne Bowen
A Call For Liberation: Aleijadinho's 'Prophets' As Capoeiristas, Monica Jayne Bowen
Theses and Dissertations
Throughout the late eighteenth century, many Brazilians became inspired by the political revolutions of the French and American colonies and sought for a similar type of revolution, hoping to gain independence from the Portuguese. One nationalistic group, the "Inconfidência Mineira," probably influenced the art of the sculptor Aleijadinho (1738-1814). Aleijadinho's work has been examined as a political message previously, but never as propaganda through the representation of capoeira, an Afro-Brazilian martial art. Capoeira probably formed as a means for Afro-Brazilian slaves to fight their way out of captivity. While training to fight, slaves would disguise capoeira to look like a …
And There Were Green Tiles On The Ceiling, Jean Catherine Richardson
And There Were Green Tiles On The Ceiling, Jean Catherine Richardson
Theses and Dissertations
In this document I shall explain my art process, and reflecting on my work, will explore the themes and emotions that evolved. I shall accompany the images of my MFA exhibition with personal poetic vignettes. These vignettes are memories and thoughts that surfaced both while making the art and while viewing the final exhibition. While the primary experience is looking at and being with my art, I hope these anecdotes and stories give some insight into my motivations and actions as an artist. In these stories I shall use my own voice; I am Scottish and will tend to use …

Ivan Mestrovic In Syracuse, 1947-1955, David Tatham
The Courier
IVAN MESTROVIC 's eight and a half years as a member of the Syracuse University faculty stand as a period of exceptional historical importance for both the sculptor and the institution. For the University, the arrival in 1947 of this world- renowned artist marked not only the beginning of a full-fledged sculpture program, one which rapidly gained national distinction, but also the beginning of a postwar effort to bring to Syracuse scholars and creative artists already eminent in their fields.

Sculptural Inquiry Into Geometric And Organic Forms, Gregory Christopher
Sculptural Inquiry Into Geometric And Organic Forms, Gregory Christopher
Senior Scholar Papers
In my Senior Scholar project I manipulated simple geometric shapes in an attempt to construct organic forms using transparent planes, created areas, and implied volumes. The sculpture, which was influenced by my interest in the Renaissance, Russian Constructivism, and the Minimalists, can best be divided into five series; each series is identified by a physical and a conceptual change of ideas. The first series focused on the conceptual ideas of each piece and expressed a lack of concern for the physical properties of the objects. The work progressed during the project; the focus of other series shifted from a purely …

Figurative Sculpture And Drawing, A Sumation Of A Year's Work, Matthew Burke
Figurative Sculpture And Drawing, A Sumation Of A Year's Work, Matthew Burke
Senior Scholar Papers
I pursued the senior scholar project under the title and thought, Figurative Sculpture and Drawing. While studying sculpture and drawing, I spent time coming to know their basic languages and exploring a variety of media in each. Throughout the year, I worked with a figurative subject, addressing ideas proposed last fall; including sculptural elements like volume, mass, line, and balance; and various drawing techniques. I set up the proposal within a loose framework which allowed the project to evolve as I pursued the work. It also encouraged me to think freely and without reservation, because I was not bound to …

The Human Figure In Drawing And Sculpture, Carolyn J. Treat
Senior Scholar Papers
My project as a Senior Scholar has been the study of the human figure through drawing and sculpture. I have worked directly from the model in order to understand the form and structure of the human body. The result of this concentrated study has been a sharpened sense of vision and an increased confidence in the use of materials for both two and three-dimensional representation.
